Vent Access Doors

They’re vent doors, usually have 2 on the front of the trailer, mounted higher up. They open and close with a refrigerator type latch handle. Used for a variety of reasons. Dry outs after a washout, get rid of bad smells from a previous load, in certain seasons and temperatures can be used to keep a load cool, without running the reefer. Mostly used on refrigerated trailers, but also used other types of trailers too, which I won’t get into here.

 

easy open, easy shut. Also easy sealed. (Not that it wont stop a bad actor)

Stick a temperature dial into the back one and shut it, check it once in a while among other things.

There is a type of reefer service called ventilated which goes with the railroads mainly until the 50's If it was not necessary to ice or have burners inside of the car bunkers. Trucking is a much smaller version of that. I did not use them often, partly because of valuable cargo inside the trailer.

 

To X1, if someone wants into your high value trailer load, they wouldn’t be recruiting a Pygmy to get through your vent door!!! Much faster and easier to defeat your padlock, no matter what the package says when you buy one. Watch a few YouTube videos of lock pickers beating the highest security locks on the market today, brut force not needed, just an experienced picker with the right tools. I used to see armed escorts following loads of Gillette razor blades leaving Boston. Can you imagine the value of a trailer full of tiny razor blades that sell for $3 to $5 each? Do the math! Lol

Been in the old Jersey City where in the quiet of the night you can hear the saws. Don't take much. It was better to just stop going there. The Lombardi wasnt much better. Pretty much any place in Jersey if I tried to sleep particularly when empty, the doors would need closing come morning. Someone always gets into them. Finds nothing. Otherwise I get out of that state before stopping.

Ive been relatively lucky with those loads. However I think two things happened some years ago, a rig carrying narcotics and nothing to draw attention to it was tracked and stripped.

I'll say this. If they did get into the trailer they are welcome to it. There are a few items in that box thats for them.

 

Always take your charged cellphone into your reefer with you just in the off chance some idiot locks you in. My small door has an opener from the inside but doesnt seem to work.
