I've been running into this lately. I'm not long winded, so it's not a text length issue. I ran into this issue with my iPhone 4S and the current iPhone 5.

Maybe you have too many apps running.I know if you have too many programs on your compute that would cause it to be slow.

I use a motorola phone on verizon. Had it 2 years next month. No problems at all. Not even when in Canada.

What kind of phone? If it's Android...push and hold the home button (if your phone has one) and go to task manager, then to memory and clear out your memory. My wife has an S4, but bought the 16gig instead of the 32...and she is a picture-a-holic so it's crammed full. And since the latest update(Android 4.4.4) we can't move the older pic's over to her sdcard...only new pic's are set to store there. She has the same problem, but we live in a fringe area 1/2 way between a 4g tower and a 3g tower...so it can't make up it's mind which tower to connect to and send a message.
Also try turning on airplane mode and then back off. This re-pings the tower locations and may trigger it to send.
SMS over wifi? Most android's have to have a special app to do that (it'll still send because it's picking up a cell tower). My son's house has a metal roof and he gets 0 signal inside except by 1 window. He has a wifi router, but can't receive messages unless he leaves his phone on his front living room window ledge.
I started having random signal issues and message problems after the 4.4.4 update on my Verizon Note 3...but because it's random, Verizon won't do squat, but it only started after the update so it has to be something in the radio file that screws it up. -
you CAN, however. have too many programs in your system tray clock. that ties up your RAM memory. a simple use of msconfig to shut everything off will fix that problem. although, i don't know how or if it's accomplished in windows 8. -

When I used HE...I was referring to the thread originator...but I see your point. People out here still use computers? I can't remember the last time I had either of mine out of their case.
