Hello everyone, I have a quick question I never ran into something like this so I purchased a Volvo with 335k miles but it has 18,900 says 65% idle. engine hours a lot a lot of idling. It’s all legit I bought truck off of auction contacted owner and verified with dealer it’s all legit miles and hours just there was a driver that liked sleeping with truck on. My question is how bad is this for the engine it self? would it still run and I can drive it? Anyone have something similar any experiences? Thanks

It was either slept in a lot with the engine running or it's equipped with a PTO and was used to liquid or bulk tanker work. Yes it will still run and drive but you're likely to experience issues with the emissions components earlier than you would like. It's hit or miss, I drive a Mack tri axle part time that has 356k miles and 32k hours and it runs great, but it's ran hard like it's supposed to be. Not sure if I'd trust a highway truck to act the same way

Yea that’s what everyone told me is I’ll have issues either way emmssion, I was just thinking if it’ll be ok to drive it OTR cause that’s what I do seems like everyone else is saying that it’s not a big problem and that when truck is put to work with that much hours has more stress on engine and all than a truck that just idled. I got it for very good price and it has 1 year left warranty on engine and tranny still.

I bought a 21 this past year with higher idle hours than I would like. I don't remember exactly at the moment but 10-12k idle hours on 500k miles, same as you no APU. I bought a 250k Volvo extended warranty with the truck to hedge this a little.

So far it paid off. In order to sell me the warranty the selling dealer had to completely go through the truck to get Volvo to write the warranty. They did a bunch of sensors and a full emissions system cleanup and check out as well as a bunch of other stuff, which I didn't have to pay for. Meaning I just paid the price of the truck that I negotiated on plus the $10k for the warranty.

I have had to do essentially nothing to this truck in the first year of ownership. A couple of wheel seals and routine maintenance up until just about a month ago. I took it in for a CEL and needed a couple more sensors, a DEF heater and a couple of other small parts. Cost me $2300 after the warranty paid for most of the work. I don't even know what all they did, I haven't looked at the bill yet.

My previous truck cost me an average of $20k per year to run including trailer and all tires. So far this one with the warranty is paying off. Maybe $5k in maintenance including tires and a trailer repair I had mid year.

Yea I heard dealer are very sneaky when it comes to covering something under a warranty. so I guess I’ll just fix up the truck and keep running it seems like everyone saying it’s not a big deal engine wise that my truck been idled a lot, one guy once told me, he rather buy a truck with 300k miles and 18 hrs than a truck with 700k miles and low engine hours. Makes sense to me I guess lol

What is the information on the truck. Motor is D13 is it a TC? What is RAR? If you are gonna run it I would run Hot Shots Secret in it ti help clean out the emissions. If none TC it loves 1250 RPMS at least on mine it does. I have 500 HP D13 None TC with 2.79 RAR. Does pretty good.

Yup the truck i just got had 15k hours at 461k miles (for refrence the computer says 3500 pto hours so....) and i had to have the entire system serviced. As an example of what OP can expect.

Dpf cleaned, new sensors throughout, egr high pressure sensor replaced and tube cleaned, egr tubeing cleaned, def tank dropped and cleaned with filter, new decomp tube, all new gaskets and clamps, new doser, new injector and a few other things. Warranty covered most but it was still almost 7k to get everything squared away. Without warranty id be looking at nearly 25K for everything with a goodly chunk of that being just labor.

So a good cheap used rig can work. Just be prepared to throw almost as much as it cost at the rig to get it squared away. Also seeing as it had such high hours. The system is likely degraded. I recomend doing a full DPF clean every 100k or 5000 hours, def filters at 50k and having the high pressure sensor on the EGR pulled and cleaned at 50 and replaced at 100k. Further have the EGR and its pipes cleaned yearly. It will stave off a goodly chunk of issues.
