The fact yard dogs were never paid by the mile escapes you huh?
Start here. Find a location you want to work at and see if they have a yard guy open.

Sounds like you enjoy living in the past or living in a fantasy. Yard drivers don't get paid by the mile.

You will not be hired as a Walmart yard driver off the street unless you apply at a brand new DC. Back up yard drivers from inside the DC will get those positions. Your only real chance is to start out loading trailers inside a DC and work your way up. It is NOT worth it unless you actually enjoy long hours in extreme heat/cold and working every holiday for straight pay. Also $21 an hour is accurate but that is the top of the pay scale and you will actually start around $16 and earn every penny twice. The pay is OK but you will break your back for a company that couldn't care less about their employees.

I don't know what it's like, and it's one of the reasons I became a truck driver I couldn't stand working indoors in a factory/dc setting, but I've heard we have very low turnover rates in our dc like in the single digits.

    Oh jeez.

Look he was quipping like most with zero clue about the workings of Walmart about a payscale that has since been rescinded.

I get you folks want to jump up and defend your buddies but you might just want to examine the context of their post.

No DC yard driver is paid by the mule at Walmart. They are hourly employees actually under the control of the traffic office and not transportation.
