whoa that RR crossing is just right down a little ways from me, never knew that happen.

I just wouldnt even be on the tracks period, but if its a situation, u better believe imma be honking that horn till they moved or nudge them. But in simpler terms just dont put your self in that situation.

I'm trying to find the publication, but my company has it written that if you were to get caught on the tracks and the crossing guard came down in front of you, drive through it and break it off to avoid being hit by the train.

I thought I was pretty clear in the laid out senario but let me make it real simple.

I was told in class that trucks have to always deal with people cutting in front of them. Should I see some tracks and judge that I have enough room to clear them and while doing so I get a car that cuts in front of me and stops.

My instructor said to gently push them out into the intersection if I can't pull to either side of them. He also mentioned stopping on the tracks is a serious NO NO and that 1 truck gets hit by a train at least X amout per X amount. I don't remember how often but it was a lot.

What the heck is your instructor smoking; crack?:biggrin_2556: One it will be a chargeable accident. Two they will take you and your co to court. You will be fired and will not ever drive a truck again. Even if they are not injured they will win a case for mental anguish and other medical issues. Just because you are bigger than they are does not give you the right to push them out of the way. Even if they are wrong.

I think you need a reputable instructor/school. Seems like you posted on another thread where this instructor was wrong about something else.

I will tell you what to do if you ever get stranded on a track. (don't for starters, but there is a box near the intersection) If memory serves me right there is a number on it that ID's that intersection. Call 911. If a train is coming towards you run toward the train not from it. The impact will take the truck and debris a long ways and will kill you if you try to out run it.

So I stopped at a red light in front of a truck stop, this truck in the picture stops looks both ways and CLEARLY sees the light to his right was RED and had a set of train track 20 feet in front of the stop light and there was already one car stopped at the line. But he decides to take a right and has to stop where you see him Completely blocking the tracks with no way out.

What he should have done was stay where he was to my right at the exit of the truck stop until the light was green and the road was clear.

The truck should of stopped on the white line in front of the tracks so not to stop on the tracks and wait for the light to turn green and then if the RR gates are not activated, look both ways down the tracks, and listen for train horns before crossing. Look, listen, and live around RR tracks. If the driver knew the light was red on the other side of the tracks then should of not taken the right turn.

About bumping cars out into cross traffic sounds stupid. There are always RR signs to warn drivers of RR tracks ahead which means you have to be prepared to stop short of the tracks, weather it is a train, other vehicals stopped by the RR tracks, or traffic lights. If you get in a tight spot with a stop sign just on the other side of the tracks, stop short of the tracks look both ways, turn the radio off, roll the windows down, and listen for the train horn. Also make sure the traffic ahead of you is clear before you proceed to the stop sign.

You are right on the little sign at every RR crossing, it has the phone # directly to the RR that owns the track and it also has an ID # identifying that particular crossing. If you get stuck on the tracks and you don't see or hear a train coming, definitely call that #, they will stop all RR traffic until you are reported clear. If you do see a train coming, you will have a very short amount of time to make a decision, move, or risk a horrible death. I've been back to work on the rails for two months and I've seen three trucks have their nose to close to the tracks. When the gates came down they started bouncing off the hood of the truck, two drivers just sat there watching the gates bounce and one drove through tearing the gates down. I had an old engineer tell me a story about hitting a semi one night on a country road, the driver was pinned inside and the rig caught on fire, the cops showed up right away and they couldn't free the driver. To make a long story short, the driver was begging the cop to shoot him because he didn't want to burn.
I heard one other story about a driving school rig. There were four students and an instructor sitting at a crossing waiting for the train to pass. The student had the truck in gear and either his foot slipped off the clutch or he just had a brain fart and the tractor lunged in front of the train. The engineer and conductor said they hit the tractor and pushed it about a mile down the tracks. It caught on fire right after they hit it and what they described wasn't easy to hear.
The only opinion I can give, if you are in the situation described is to get out of the way of the train any way you can.
Better to be judged by twelve than to be carried by six.
Is it legal to push a car ? My guess is No.

If he had stopped in front of the white line his truck would have blocked the entire intersection. Therefore should have not made his turn.
