i had been driving since 0100 AM on slick icy snowy roads so my interaxle lock was engaged, as you all know not to exceed 45 miles per hour. As the sun came up I was looking for a place to pull over to disengage it. This Watkins Shepard had started his day half an hour prior and didn't have the patience to wait for a legal place to pass just a couple miles up. I had been through that area the week prior and counted 3 trucks laid over in the median. But I agree, driving for maximum safety will sometimes get you killed from the 'in a hurry' killer truck drivers out there living paycheck to paycheck.

How do you know he started his day 30 minutes prior and why do you care?

You don't have to stop to disengage the interaxle lock...just throw the #### switch. Same with engaging it. As long as you aren't spinning a tire, it's a shift-on-the-fly deal. If unsure, lift off the throttle and throw the switch to engage, and if you're paranoid, you can do the same to disengage.

Now get the F out of the way already!

I have been doing it that way for years but the mechanics at the TA in Missoula Montana found metal shavings in my differentials and said interaxle shifting on the fly is a bad no no. The other drivers in the waiting room all said the same thing too, stop to engage/disengage and back up a few feet before going forward again.

I'd trust your truck's user manual over any "mechanic" you might find at a TA. IMG_20160112_164720.png

It's not a big deal your going slow and your in the way. It was a clean pass just back out of it as you see them come out and let them on by. That little box truck passed you too. I would pass you as well. So what is your problem?

    pattyj and HalpinUout Thank this.

So is impeding traffic and speeding and I bet you do both at times.

Heck, I have full lockers on my truck and I lock them on the fly all the time. Especially when pulling a belly dump this happens multiple times per day. I lock them all in before dumping.

Heck our shop finds crap in truck differentials that don't even have an interaxle lock. It is part of the process of metal on metal.

    scottied67 Thanks this.
