MILAM COUNTY, Texas (KWTX/Gray News) – A central Texas high school baseball player and his parents were killed when they were hit by a semitruck in a construction zone while the family was on the way to the player’s baseball game Monday evening.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said parents Clint and Meghan McCaffety died in the crash, and the Rogers Independent School District confirmed that their son, Connor McCaffety, was also killed.
“It is with overwhelming sadness that I share the tragic loss of Connor McCaffety, a junior at Rogers ISD,” Superintendent Duana Brashear shared in a Facebook post Tuesday morning. “Our hearts go out to everyone who is grieving this loss. Our entire district, and the communities we serve, are impacted by this loss.”
Public safety officials said Clint McCaffety was driving a Ford sedan and stopped in the westbound lane in a construction zone on Highway 36 near the Milam-Burleson County line.
A Kia SUV stopped behind the family’s car, and a semitruck was driving behind the Kia. Officials said the 18-wheeler slammed into the two vehicles.
Clint McCaffety, 43, Meghan McCaffety, 39, and Connor McCaffety, 16, were all pronounced dead at the scene.
The Kia SUV also rolled into a ditch, and the driver, a 45-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital. The extent of her injuries is unknown.
Officials said the crash happened around 4:40 p.m. and the highway was shut down for about seven hours.
The Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash, and it’s currently unclear why the semitruck slammed into the other two vehicles.
Officials said the driver of the semitruck is a 26-year-old man. It’s unclear if he was injured.
Officials said the McCaffety family was leaving a high school golf tournament in Brenham and were on their way to Connor McCaffety’s home baseball game at Rogers High School when the crash happened.

Not saying thats what happened here, hell for all we know it was a maintaince issue that was ignored and the engine just died there. It also doesnt say it was a sudden stop either. So id want to hear more info before i put the full blame on the ford. Regardless if that truck was following so close he couldnt stop, unless the car swerved infront of him giving him no room. It is absolutely on the driver.broke down plumber, Sirscrapntruckalot and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
