Watching those 6 year olds doing it for hours on end makes one feel almost inadequate and incompetent.
Something I have noticed out here (only 3 months) is that a lot of drivers have red/purplish calves. What causes that? Blood pooling in their legs from years of sitting? Lack of circulation/exercise?
Generally poor circulation. But I'll tell ya...with more and more so-called "professional" drivers speeding, talking on phones while holding a cuppa whatevah whilst racing through the parking lot at the truckstop, you can burn off calories playing "Dodge-Da-Truck". Just don't lose, 'cuz you only get to lose once. But I'm in the same boat...I really need to walk more, and have started parking as far away from the buildings as possible just as a starter. I also carry a 20-pound dumbbell and a stretch band. However, self-discipline is still somewhat sluggish.
I have been OTR for 3 months now and lost 26 pounds. I walk daily, I don't walk around the truck stop I will walk up and down the road in front of it. My 1st week I was almost hit several times so I decided walking on the road was better. I also use various things on the truck for weight and do curls and various things for my arms. Good luck.
All you have to do to avoid the poor circulation is move your legs up and down to music tap your feet rotate toes to heel. I had a stroke nurse tell me that.
Speaking of dumbells, I had those Bow-Flex Select Tec dumbells and they were perfect for trucking. They go up to 60lbs and you just turn the knob to make them weigh how ever much you want. They are pretty much the size of a regular dumbell so they really don't take up hardly any space. I bought a little workout bench that folded up and I just bungeed it to my slider bar on the back of the truck. The dumbells were a little pricey but well worth it.
