JMO Escrow is not a normal function except for a lease purchase.
As long as folks such as yourself perpetuate such actions as normal, it won't diminish as fast as it has risen to be perceived as normal.
It is mainly used to offset operating costs of poorly run trucking companies.
Instead of an escrow a legitimate one will hire a qualified vetted driver and help them succeed.
Companies that have escrow usually have many trucks abandoned and probably deserve it.
What are your thoughts on this...

Indulge me, please.
Everyone go to craigslist for their city. Click "transportation" in the jobs section. Type "escrow" into the search bar. What companies are listed that require escrow and how much is it?
@Dennixx don't lump me into some BS group of people that you perceive as the cause of all the negative propagation of escrow accounts. That's basic. I'm no more responsible for escrow accounts at a trucking firm than you are responsible for their hiring practices.
I will agree with you about at least one thing though...because you just made my point for me, that I've tried to make for 2 days now: perpetuating perceived "normal" behavior is something we all can do! I've been asking what can be done about rates and offered the suggestion that people learn how to provide decent and fair rates. That behavior, in my opinion, could keep the pendulum from swinging so high at each end.Another Canadian driver and tscottme Thank this. -
People that don't know any better. Is it your fault for the information that you don't have or haven't learned yet? If you're searching for a job and many companies require escrow, are you going to think it's normal or not? How would you know if you've never been in the trucing biz?Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

Never said you were..
You posted it was a normal business function and it's not.
Do you currently work for a company that requires an escrow account?MotorMouthMike, Another Canadian driver, God prefers Diesels and 2 others Thank this. -
Because it's illegal.
If they are doing something illegal out in the open, what are they doing behind closed doors?
In monetary terms, employee wage theft far outstrips shop lifting (#2) or burglary (#3) combined with aggravated robbery (#4). Normalizing employee escrow funds normalizes theft. We're not messing with his head, you're pulling the wool over his eyes.
Warning: extremely long answer ahead!
NO, N-O, NO, NO-NO-NO-NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
As part of a lease agreement, yes. In regards to employment, no.
SFI has a maintenance escrow for new leaders that follows the truck where ever it goes. Sign on with Landstar or Mercer? Sure, lease terms don't change. But any company that requires a deposit on company owned equipment immediately becomes disreputable.MartinFromBC, Another Canadian driver, REO6205 and 2 others Thank this. -
Exactly what happened to me. No med card starting all over. DMV downgrade to class C. I was at least going to go to a school for a refresher anyway so not a big deal to me, but better call DMV to make certain they didn't downgrade your CDL.MotorMouthMike and Another Canadian driver Thank this.

I am never going to pay for a job. Had one tell me to go buy some steel toed boots for the warehouse. Well i didnt work in the warehouse. I only went into it to get my pallet jack and make sure the trailer was ready to go. I went over the managers head and told them i wasnt buying anything. They agreed with me and told the manager to drop it. I needed a job but not that one... I actually didnt last long because of the manager. I dont do well with morons.MartinFromBC, Another Canadian driver, God prefers Diesels and 1 other person Thank this.

I too am getting back into driving and going W2. I will not sign on with a company that withholds anything other than my taxes period. Better have the comcheck funds ready for lumpers. If I am going to NYC better be ready to put the toll money on my fuel card or have the ez pass because I do not carry cash and I am not waiting all month for you to decide which tolls you want to reimburse me for. Picking up a trailer at a transfer station from Mexico and it needs new glad hands because they took them off or replaced them with rotted ones they better have an account with the transfer station for new ones because as a W2 employee it is my responsibility to let you know about the defect, not pay to have the defect fixed. As a W2 only your taxes should be withheld, unless it is a teamsters/union job where your union dues get paid out of your check. I bet once you get to orientation and look over the contract there will be a ton of other items they will apply a penalty or fee for. I would keep looking.MartinFromBC, Another Canadian driver, tscottme and 2 others Thank this.
