Probably get a new physical, then take it to the DMV and get your CDL reinstated.
    Ask the DMV about that.

Carter Express has their own cdl school in Anderson, Indiana.
They haul auto parts mostly, out of Laredo, Texas. Maybe some of their drivers are on this forum and can fill in the blanks.
    According to drive4carterexpress.com
When you attend training at one of our certified partner schools, Carter Express can sponsor you which includes covering 100% of the tuition costs or offering a tuition reimbursement program. Once you have secured your CDL, Carter Express has a six-week paid training program to prepare you for a successful new career.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday. While I have never heard of anybody doing this, I also have never heard of anybody being told to pound sand. There might be a time limit after doing this to go undo it. You DON"T have to have a physical if you self certify intrastate. It is worth the effort to at least try.

Have you reached peak recovery after surgery? If not, keep at it, and renew your license when you can pass the physical.

Otherwise, I do not think yard trucks require CDL as long as you don't go out on public roads for fuel, or to spot trailers in different lots. I say this because there is a one-armed yard driver at Atlanta Bonded in Kennesaw, GA, who has been there for years.

EDIT: Everything I just said is suspect, if there is no lifting requirement for a CDL. I will leave it up only because I don't know if it might actually be true in some states. Do your homework for your state.

you NEED a CDL to rent a CDL truck.

further, the possibility looms that he may not be easily hired with out some sort of schooling certificate.

do not forget, trucking companies have to answer to thier insurance companies.

On the 'Self certification", it is not intrastate or interstate. You can self certify "Intrastate" in a category that still requires and current DOT physical. The category that needs to be checked in a person wants to keep their CDL without a current physical is either "Excepted Interstate" or "Excepted Intrastate".
Either category allows you to keep your CDL and also drive doing anything covered by those categories:
    • To transport school children and/or school staff between home and school
    • As Federal, State or local government employees
    • To transport human corpses or sick or injured persons
    • Fire truck or rescue vehicle drivers during emergencies and other related activities
    • Primarily in the transportation of propane winter heating fuel when responding to an emergency condition requiring immediate response such as damage to a propane gas system after a storm or flooding
    • In response to a pipeline emergency condition requiring immediate response such as a pipeline leak or rupture
    • In custom harvesting on a farm or to transport farm machinery and supplies used in the custom harvesting operation to and from a farm or to transport custom harvested crops to storage or market
    • Beekeeper in the seasonal transportation of bees
    • Controlled and operated by a farmer, but is not a combination vehicle (power unit and towed unit), and is used to transport agricultural products, farm machinery or farm supplies (no placard-able hazardous materials) to and from a farm and within 150 air-miles of the farm
    • As a private motor carrier of passengers for non-business purposes
    • To transport migrant workers

Not necessarily, depends on the state. Florida downgraded my CDL because I didn't provide a current med certificate (I was living overseas and didn't get the mailed notifications/warnings).

All I needed to do to reinstate my CDL was get a new med card...and pay the renewal fee.

Check with the state DMV before you sign up for school or whatever.
