I was a pizza delivery driver and worked retail. I wanted a job where I could be left alone and do my thing. The government paid for my truck driver training and I have held a CDL since the beginning of 2010.

Heavy construction 1990-2008 when the economy crashed, came over to trucking after being off work for 15 months. Talking about license suspensions, I had a little fender bender at hometime back in February, not 5 minutes to exchange insurance info with the other guy and go on our way from private property grocery store lot. No damage to my car a little paint rubbed off his front drivers side fender where we made contact with my rear right back door. The insurance guy put me at 75% at fault, DMV threatened to suspend my license because I didn't fill out and send in some form that is required when there is an injury or death or damage over $750 dollars in California. Anyway somehow Swift found out about it and alerted me so I was able to call the DMV and get it headed off at the pass and straightened out. The more I think about it now I think the guy already had the damage but was looking for a situation where he could get his car fixed for free because there was absolutely no scrape or damage to my car compared to his Beemer fender which looked like it had been hit by a mack truck.

scottie that sucks, at least they are giving you a chance to get things fixed before your license DOES get suspended and then you lose your job over it. The law is a joke, just something little can be $750+
2 years ago I had a guy back into my right side door of my new car I bought before I lost my job, the door ended up costing over $2k to fix but the person pleaded fault and paid for it. Body work is just so dang expensive these days especially on newer cars. I never reported it to the DMV but I guess the insurance company probably did all the paperwork, it showed up on my H6 as a not at fault accident, annoying how even an accident not your fault shows up.

Yea you could make some decent money in car sales, I sold new and used, but you could also starve if you didn't have it in you at times to go make some "deals". Used was where the money was usually since you were allowed to make your own price by looking at the coded vehicle stock number which usually showed the buy value the dealer had in it. I was a pretty nutty Restaraunt manager too, was told to quit or be fired even though I ran good numbers and had good service, I was doing things that scared the franchise owners. One of the reasons was I had fired nearly the entire staff cause they were selling weed and smoking during work. The replacements were all sexy young women instead of men, lol at the time I didn't realize how much crap I was doing, but my area supervisor was shaking his head at me every time he walked in my spot. He still had a big grin though when he walked in, told me to think with my big head often.

Retail sucks! Was travel agent which I loved, pharmacy tech, secretary until 2008 when the economy crashed and then too many odd jobs to count now retail for several jobs. Anyone who complains about 30-40K should work retail for a few years. I've already paid for my vacation from late august until labor day or else I'd already been in trucking school. I'm trying to figure out if going after labor day is a good idea or wait until the next spring. Everything slows down from mid December until early March anyways. My Step Sisters Fiancee is a trucker for United Van Lines and that what he says is the slowest time of the year. So maybe then.

yeah there are slow times, keep a good record, keep your turn down of loads at a low percent and sometimes that gets DM's to give you a load over someone else, if there is a list of 10 people and your at the bottom but most of those others have a record of turning down a lot of loads then they can throw it right down to you. My DL was explaining this to me, he said it sucks for some but sometimes the DM's dont like to sit and wait to see who takes what and if someone takes anything then sometimes they get offered sooner.

If your an o/o you can just constantly be looking for your next load before dropping your current one.

    isnt it?
I didnt think I would ever be driving for a living up until a few months ago, figured eventually I would open my own restaurant or move where Chefs are in high demand. I prefer to drive to be honest so far but can fall back on chefing if I ever needed to.
