not paying attention to what's happening in front of them or surroundings. i was driving into the bp inspection station north of laredo. there are multiple signs plus road markings that read "cars use left lane" "trucks use right lane", her comes supertrucker blowing by in the left lane.

You mean this whole time I thought I was a super trucker I might actually be a steering wheel holder?

I always thought a steering wheel holder was that driver who treats trucking like a dead end minimum wage job: No interest in developing skills to do it better, no interest in the occupation or the culture, no desire to join the family of the road.

They are just there... For a while, until a better gig comes along. Or they get fired. Or they kill themselves or someone else.

I always thought a steering wheel holder was a "trucker" that absolutely had to have an automatic or autoshift because they couldn't work a manual.

It means the other guy is mad at you for driving a dry van, wearing Flip flops and a t-shirt,
Don't fix anything on the truck,
    Play Xbox while getting loaded,
Get your 10 hour break everyday,
    Drive the best equipment,
    Don't touch any freight,
Don't have to shift any gears,
Get to fuel at the big chain truck stops,
    Got pre pass,
    Got ez pass,
And you make the same amount of money
As everybody else who doesn't have those luxuries.
    So there mad at you.

The steering wheel holder is the smartest driver
Out here. He only does what he gets paid for,
    That's holding the steering wheel.
I'm proud to be a steering wheel holder.
I take that as a compliment.

I follow all precautions and stay out only for as long as I have to get the bills paid. Get my 2-3 runs in and get back to the house to hibernate. Let all the fast traffic and speed demons, 4 and 18 wheeled run by me as I pull to the shoulder. I don't like to be crowded up.
Some say it's a lifestyle, I still see it as a job that's to be taken seriously and then out of the mind once the tractor's parked back at the yard and I hop on my Schwinn back to the house.
