How about getting a Plastic Shopping Bag of that Material from Ur Attic and taking it to a Local Insulation Contractor or a Building Materials Supply Yard and someone should be able to ID the stuff for U

 

Celulose. It’s actually really cheap. Put like an R40 up there, that house would heat like a dream

If you're thinking it may be asbestos, I would either leave it alone or do it myself, from what I've heard abatement companies can get pretty expensive, if you do it yourself at least wear goggles, mask and coveralls. And any areas you can wet it some so there is not so much air born dust. Also if you do it yourself you could attract attention because in pretty much everyplace I've worked it was considered HAZ-MAT, just food for thought.

My grand farther died from asbestos in lungs (it doesn't leave), and it was ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE TO WATCH, can only imagine how it was on his end.

Do your best to not disturb or damage the insulation that is in place. If it is a vermiculite type of insulation, it probably does contain asbestos. No dust!
Before you get knee deep in this project, it would be a good idea to get what is currently up there tested. If it does test positive for asbestos, you’ll find that it is not as big of a problem as you might think. What needs to be done is an encapsulation process. Basically isolation of the asbestos product. It will depend on what it tested as. Could be as simple as putting down a paper barrier. Sort of the same stuff that’s on batt insulation. The whole deal is to prevent dust migration.

The other thing that’s really important is the attic space ventilation. What type does the place have? Soffit, gable end or? Then does the roof have vents or is it a ridge system.
If it’s soffit type, you’re going to need to make sure the vents are clear, possibly installing or adding baffles to keep the insulation from blocking the vents. Good air flow in the attic space can really make a big difference in heating and cooling. Also mitigation of molds and mildew, plus it could make your roof last longer.

If the house is on a crawl space, Another item you may want to test for is Radon. Mitigation is actually pretty easy. May need to dig some of the dirt out, spread some rock and put down a plastic vapor barrier. Possibly add some ventilation.

Check with the local building department, they should have a list of resources for this. The county health department may actually do free Radon testing.
