That’s what happens when you don’t keep a shotgun tight against your shoulder before you fire it.

There are very slim pickins these days for good dry van freight as a company driver. The industry has a huge over capacity of trucks and freight imo, while steady, doesnt have enough volume to keep rates up. Too many drivers will run ALL the miles they can while being underpaid because they are too ignorant to do get something better.

Even refrigerated freight isnt doing great, yet I see multitudes of trucks hauling ### everywhere with a reefer on. Too much truck capacity. Flatbed is getting the same way unfortunately.

I agree... and I think it's going to get worse... more and more new company drivers running for cheap, older ones retiring... no good changes to the HOS... I don't see with much enthusiasm my future in trucking....
My former company is a small one.. they run long haul with solo drivers... they used to have 35 drivers when I started driving for them in 2013... Now they have only 23... and it's been very hard for them to hire new drivers... They are very picky and demand years of clean record among other things... Most of their drivers are older folks with over 30 yrs experience but they are retiring, dying and the company can't replace them fast enough.... I think that companies like those are disappearing...
One thing about drop and hook that I don't like is that sometimes, one drops an excellent trailer and picks up a POS with lots of problems, or too heavy and then, instead of hitting the road, one has to go to a repair shop...
There's no simple answer in trucking... I am still not sure what I will do when I am back in the USA...
If I go back to a carrier, which one will be....? I don't know.... But I know that I will not be trucking for much longer...
And one of my company's driver told me today that more and more truck stops, even the mom n pop truck stops are charging for parking.. He couldn't tell which ones.. he said he saw some on I-40.... :biggrin_1square1:
Parking is another problem I see... it's getting worse... and no doubt it will be more and more difficult... no more truck rest areas being built, truck stops are charging more and more... I think eventually they will all charge for the whole yard.. You know, I used to be able to find good free parking spots at Pilots and FJs... but lately, before I left the USA, I started to see them charging for all the good spots and leaving only the crappy ones for free.... the ones that are difficult, too tight to back in and to leave early in the morning.... :angry1:

Im on I40 in Santa Rosa, NM right now at the TA and there's more than enough parking. If you get even a little creative, parking is easy. All these mega carrier guys are so conditioned to only park at a mega truck stop, they never think outside the box. I flat out refuse to pay for parking somewhere that I, as well as others spend hundreds of dollars a week on just fuel.

I constantly park in walking distance to a gas station (rest room) and actual decent places for food. I dont have to worry about Swifty McSuck backing in 3" from me, some jerk off with a reefer screaming all night, or some 13" straight pipes droning on high idle.

I know that TA... I don't like those parking spots unless they are on the front row near the repair shop...
There used to be other truck stop across from I-40 where there were good parking spots but after Pilot got it, that became awful.... I used to find parking on that dirt lot next to Phillips 66 and the Dairy Queen.. but had to be very careful cause the holes on that lot were almost the size of the truck....
