I am very sad to hear that.... I bet there has been more and more trucks parked on the ramps... I have never done that....
I have parked at many and many "odd" places and even on streets overnight and empty dirt lots and abandoned fuel stations.... and even on a large shoulder on I-5 OR.....
I miss the times when it wasn't difficult to find parking at Walmart supercenters all over the country.... nowadays it's hard to find one that will allow that.. some even put low bars at all entrances to parking lot and signs of no semis everywhere....
I don't think anything will be done to increase truck parking in the country and more and more new drivers don't give a crap about parking anywhere, blocking others... it's becoming insane....
My former company reimburses parking... but in 5 yrs I may have used that 5 times... always tried to find free parking.... but I didn't park at "dangerous" or tight spots where someone might hit me or I might have difficulty backing or leaving early in the morning.. I was careful anywhere I parked... truck stops and rest areas... Thankfully never had anybody hitting "my" truck.. but sometimes I would stay awake watching the truck and would go out with flash light to help someone maneuvering next to "my" truck....![]()

In the 1970's we used to drive until we couldn't keep it on the road and pull over to the side of the road and sleep, sometimes over the steering wheel. We also ran 3 log books.

It is pretty much standard to any modern truck to have chambers that can be caged like that for servicing.
