Whatever happened to the days when sickle bars were used to mow road shoulders and fields? Sure beats the heck out of seeing the mountains of trash get chopped up and strewn about by deck mowers.

Whatever happened to the days when a chain gang would do custom grass cutting BY HAND, AND pick up all the trash?

You're right about that. There are plenty of trees and they sure help make this place bearable in the summer. The house was built in the 1890s when my Great Grandfather took this place on. There were native oaks and he planted more so the house sits in shade for most of the day. A little farther up the hill we have some old second growth redwood and doug fir with a sprinkling of pine and cedar. The house was built with timber logged here on the ranch.
Great Grandmother planted an orchard some time during WWI and some of the descendants of those trees still bear fruit. The orchard doesn't produce much but it's handy if I want a deer. They come in and eat the windfall apples in autumn and I can sit on the back porch and pop one if I want some venison for the freezer.
