Yup. In the case of SEFL (I started there recently) and ABF..you start out as a driver trainee/dock worker. In the case of SEFL...you start out with regular driver pay if you've already got your CDL. As you said...with a position like that, you're going to be on the dock (helping out loading/unloading freight) and yard dog (moving trailers around). In an eight hour shift...I'll spent maybe 3-4 hours shuffling trailers around, breaking down "sets" (doubles), and another 3-4 hours helping the regular dock guys unload freight.

For me (coming from a white collar job)...it was a bit of a kick in the junk for my first couple shifts, lol. I have to say that I'm excited to go to work and I'm happy when I leave (happy as in I usually had a good day/shift), which is a big change from my last gig.

Apply to them all then show up to inquire about your application. Show them you want it.

Yup. I forgot to mention that. I got my interviews at both of the LTL carriers that I mentioned by following up on my applications two weeks later. I was coded in their systems as "Pending Interview," but me giving the POC's a call kick-started the HR process.

With the "megas"...they've got personnel dedicated to recruiting, hiring, and firing. At many good sized, but not huge companies...one person...the terminal manager...wears all of those hats for their terminal. That's in addition to having to run the facility. Just something to keep in mind, if you tend to be of the "I'll wait for them to contact me" mindset.

Go drive a ready mix concrete truck. There is probably one near you . Just find out all you can about the definition of the word "Slump" before you go in for an interview. Good pay too.

I got on with ABF right after i got out of my CDL school. I had to go to their school when i got hired since i didn't have any experience, but they paid for it. Great company with Teamster drivers. The pay is good and the benefits like insurance and pension are incredible. They dont run you to death like the other LTL's do. Typically 8-12 stops a day, 50 hours a week.

Must have a perfect background in terms of driving and job history. It will take 2-3 months to get through the hiring process. Great time to get in with ABF, as probably 1/2 of the drivers are within a few years of retiring.

Check with Old Dominion. Don't know if the hire 21 yr. old drivers, but they have been hiring like crazy in PA and recruiting from CDL schools.

Yes, Old Dominion Freight Line. I was hired as a recent CDL grad. Each terminal is different and hires according to need. I go to our Scranton terminal in PA on occasion, looks like a decent sized terminal. I don't know if they have an age requirement, but they do hire rookies.

Also, I couldn't disagree more with the individual that posted about getting OTR experience first.

That was all I heard when I was in CDL school and when I first joined here. I get paying your dues as a new guy in a company. I do not get the concept of "paying your dues" by taking a job that absolutely does not appeal to you when appealing options exist elsewhere.

Problem I had with doing OTR was the pay was so incredibly low. Plus they said something about OTR drivers being out for days at a time away from home and they don't even get a nice hotel or anything. I started out doing LTL linehaul at $.41/mile and I got paid hourly for waiting, hooking, fueling, and breaking down ect. Almost all the OTR guys didnt offer that.

And yeah, those idiots from Sage told me the same thing. "You HAVE to do OTR. There is absolutely no way you can get a local job at all unless you do OTR first."
