Road atlas and a stack of sticky notes. Check my route and jot it down on a sticky that then goes on my windshield. I also like to download and save sat views of the local area around both my pickup and delivery locations.

I do keep a garmin but its crap, unreliable, and i use it mostly to let me know what roads are coming up. Pretty rare i actully use it as gps.

I use Google Maps, and double check for truck restrictions with Hammer and my Rand McNally atlas.

Map book or pretrip the route then either memorize it or write it down.
GPS was a waste of money

yes for the most part, they are a waste...

which makes me wanna say, i bought a really slick Garmin Smart Drive 65.

i go to different shooting ranges, and this takes me turn by turn, down some county and private dirt roads.

you know, the roads truckers should never take.???...lol

didn't cost me a lot, i used my credit card points, and got free shipping.

Unfortunately, a navigation app on a cellphone is a dead-end road. Smokey doesn't care what you were doing with your phone - if he sees it in your hand he's going to write you ticket and in some jurisdictions (Oregon and others) there are criminal penalties for using a cell phone while driving. That means he's going to put you in cuffs and drag you off to the pokey. I'd much rather pay for a GPS than risk jail. If nothing else, it's easier to read the names of the side streets on a GPS than it is to try to make them out at night or in the rain.

Exactly why I use my 10.5 inch iPad. Much easier to read.
