I work for FedEx Freight in the Atlanta area, as a city driver. I haven't got more than 35 hours a week since last July. They have cut out all overtime. The pay and benefits are good, but the hours just aren't there. FedEx Freight is not worth the trouble. My last day with FedEx is this Friday.

Although I don't totally disagree with you, union carriers use purchase too. The difference is they can bargain the amount and how it's used in the contract - same with rail.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen much of FedEx Freight here in Montana either. I saw one truck pulling doubles... Looked like a O/O rig though. I wonder if they are either really slow right now, or if they are pushing their runs to O/O.

Your last statement is so true!! Why would a driver get into a truck for .30 knowing too well that there are drivers running the same run making .55-.60? The justification I hear quite often is "I need a pay check"....really?? Is that a pay check? It's a glorified minimum wage job with 10x the risk....not to mention the sacrifice of ones dignity. UPSF LTL is union and UPSF TL is non union....TL has been hiring a lot of drivers....mileage is going down, drivers are riding the pine a couple days a week. Contract negotiations are ongoing, it expires in 07/13....word on the street is there is a strike looming. There is a heck of a mess on the horizon and union carriers are hedging their bet by hiring more drivers for their non-union segment to fill any potential disruption. More bottom feeders....killing the livable wage all the while complaining they aren't making any money, yet accepting the conditions!!?? oh goody, another UPS strike, the rest of us will pick up the slack while you guys wear holes in your shoes on the picket line. Then they can hire the bottom feeders to to run their equipment from the UPS terminal to the rail, I'll guarentee you UPRR/BNSF will be salivating at a strike as will Fedex, and others. UPS lost tens of millions in business the last strike, it'll happen again.

theyre too used to their yearly raises and 6 weeks of vacation,sick pay, home daily, 55 cpm+ and pension.. thats so far above what most other companies offer its sort of laughable that theyd go on strike. you can laugh at the 30 cpm drivers all you want, but theyre going to be hauling that freight and theyll like it too because its likely a nice low weight load that is drop/hook, no touch and good miles.cetanediesel and Gearjammin' Penguin Thank this.

Since of am gone in few days what can they do to me? Make me sit at home? I have alt of practice doing that. I am leaving fedex freight and going to a tanker company. Guess i should explain what has been going on and such. First i loved working with fedex freight. I been here 8.5 years. Wanted to be retired from here. A few years ago fedex freight bought walkins freight. Was fine. 2 years ago they decide to merge both companies into one. Keep everyone and still have priority and economy freight. But not enough work for everyone. So last July they did buy out. So my yard lost 3 drivers. We al thinking ok cool we start working. Wrong. I have not worked 1 solid week since July 2012. Few weeks (7 times) i got 3-4 days in a week. Mostly its every Friday. All want Friday off cause can enjoy weekend. January came and everyone saying ok layoff or buyouts. Wrong nothing happened. Oh they said things get better in march. Will not i swear. Since will not get buy out i gave fedex freight my two week notice i am leaving. Its with a heavy heart that i must leave fedex freight so i can work and take care of my fame. Getting u

Not to hijack this thread into a pro/anti union direction, but I could not agree with you more. Every time a union carrier goes on strike, it benefits the rest of the guys who pick up the slack. If my carrier can get some accounts that need to be filled due to a strike by another carrier, and I get to run 2,500 miles/week vs the 1,500 I run now, I am all for it. Hell yeah! Go on strike! As a matter of fact, DON'T stop striking until ALL your demands are met. I fully support it.
Look how much striking helped the bakers union. Hostess went under, the bakers lost all their jobs, and I don't have anymore d*** Twinkies. It is a lose/lose/lose situation all around. But hey, anytime there is demand for a product/service, but nobody's providing the supply, eventually someone else will fill in the shoes and benefit from it.Last edited: Feb 28, 2013
