The interstate highways have a minimum speed limit. If you are hit from behind while traveling below that minimum speed limit, you will likely get cited for impeding the flow of traffic. The driver who hit you can be cited for failure to reduce speed, unless evidence at the scene (skid marks, witnesses, a dash cam, etc.) shows they just didn't have time to avoid you in which case you'll also be cited for failure to yield the right-of-way, reckless driving, and whatever else the officer feels like writing. Unless it is an EMERGENCY, you should not be stopping on the shoulder. And no, the Quallcom beeping at you is NOT an emergency. Neither is your cell phone ringing. Find an exit, get OFF the highway, THEN worry about who is trying to reach you and call/message them back. This isn't rocket science...only trucking. Don't have to be a genius to figure it out and be safe, and yet some seem to struggle with it.

Thank you for the substantiation the typical truck driver drives little to no differently than the typical 4-wheeler.

I don't know what's wrong with ppl these days.Common since tells you to make sure the traffic is far back before merging from the shoulder. Then put your flashers on till you gain highway speed. When im in the right lane and can't get over ,i'll slow down predicting what the vehicle on the shoulder may do.Have had many of them get back on the road right in front of me.

    This issue drives me nuts.

Seen everything from sleeping, to walking the dogs . . . on the shoulder. Plain stupid.

I always liked 4-wheelers pulling off on the shoulder between the exit and entrance ramp to ostensibly swap drivers.

I think of those instances as substantiation of my theory many motorists even measure a trip of extended miles in seconds and feet.

Well, a buddy of mine... of advancing years... argued his urgent need to take a leak constituted an emergency, the rapidly building pressure was a significant distraction to his driving.

The ramp is a good idea, of course, but not always feasible because they often have no shoulder sufficient to allow getting over the fog line.

I know it,stupid people. At least find an exit and pull over if its really that important to take the dog out.Ive seen many trk drivers taking their 10 on the shoulder.Takes a lot of guts that's for sure.

Legally you have the right of way if they are merging on. Ask a cop

Some one should explain this shoulder is for emergencies only theory to the police departments so they will have to quit pulling ppl over
