That's why Warren Buffett bought a majority stake in Pilot/Flying J.

The problem is the number of guys who habitually make their logs say what they want. It's the non acknowledgement that they've been running illegal. My friends Chris Porter and Itch Vandenberg were killed by a driver who was in major violation of the HOS. When they went back and audited his logs it showed a pattern of short breaks, false logs, and running over hours. I'm not saying else's would have saved them, but that driver willfully disregarded the law, and we as am industry have tolerated it for too long.

I can work back-to-back 12 hour shifts and then drive legally. How many accidents that involved commercial vehicles were caused by 4-wheelers?

Dad 1 and 2 went to bed at 1900. Son 1 has a traditional key to get in the door and can tell his father he came home at 2000 even though he arrived at 2015.

Son 2 has an electronic hotel credit card type key that logs the time/date stamp when it was swiped in the front door at 2015 and walks on pins and needles the next 6 months hoping not to get inspected or audited at which time the violation will fall off son 2's record.

Thats not the question. The question is of the fatal wrecks caused by cmv drivers, how many were in violation of the HOS?

I don’t know the answer to that. I’m on my phone I can’t look it up right now. But I do know most accidents involving semis aren’t the truck drivers fault.

It seems to me if they really want to make the roads safer they will start going after the biggest problems first and work their way down. Not starting with the smaller problems.

Start with the problem you can actually fix. Depending on the study, 30-40% of cmv crashes caused by the cmv were the result of fatigue. The fact is since the 2004 HOS accidents per million miles are down, the percentage of accidents caused by cmv are down. The HOS have problems, no serious person can argue differently. However a major problem in this industry is the number of people flouting the rules. It makes it dificult to demonstrate the issues with the HOS when drivers ignore them and the freight gets delivered on tine. All the little outlaws running 5,000 miles a week solo at 1.10 a mile keep rates low.

    Snailexpress Thanks this.

you aren’t seeing that there are hundreds of little outlaws per truck. There are more four wheelers so the threat is greater.

They can fix it. They can start by not letting these yahoos with half a dozen speeding and reckless tickets and accidents get their license back. Some of them have like 3 suspensions and multiple dui and they still get their driver card back.
