The associated costs are insane.
And horses always trying to kill themselves, and their riders. We've had some spectacular wrecks.
Some examples
Mare was fixin to foal so we put her up in the corral. This corral was made out of 1/2" rebar between the posts. Somehow, she broke a weld on one post, and managed to impale herself on the rebar. Completly through her neck. How she didn't hit jugular or windpipe I'll never know.
Crazy beech we had managed to get two hooves through the cattle guard. She went nuts and somehow had three hooves in at once. Had to drug her and torch the cattle guard.
Old Fort Days rodeo in Fort Smith, niece riding one of our best geldings, spins around a barrel and breaks a leg above "knee". Compound fracture, sad deal. Had to put him down right there.
Just a few months ago, one of my young cousins shakes a feed bucket at the horses in the pasture. Ground was wet, and he ran down towards the gate.
He slipped in the mud, ran into a plow blade, and eviscerated himself right there.singlescrewshaker, FullMetalJacket, OLDSKOOLERnWV and 17 others Thank this. -
Easier to unload than square bales in a cattle pot!
At least they're strapped down. They were too chicken to tip the decks and roll them behind posts, though!singlescrewshaker, FullMetalJacket, OLDSKOOLERnWV and 16 others Thank this. -
I had one do exactly that. I had to put him down.

Yeah. Ours made it. Good thing she was a calm mare. Didn't fight it at all.
I'd like to try a mule some day, but I think the wife would be against it. Probably for the best.
Hard to fall off a bird dog unless you're hittin the mash pretty hard.Last edited: Apr 6, 2025
