That’s not being bougie that’s just common sense. Mine barely clear the cross joist and rubbed the stacks on the black truck but they were 13’8”. If you can’t roll your whole ### unit through it it’s in the #### way all the time

I used to use this for pulling my cooling pack without pulling the hood. But it was very limited - it's only purpose was to pull the pack - you couldn't swing it, and the arm wasn't long enough to pull a head or anything - With the hood off, cherry picker could do the head. It was always a tetris shuffle to accomplish anything.

My shop is small - especially with the 2 post lift in the way, I wouldn't be able to roll a gantry crane anywhere anyway. So I built an "overhead gantry". Just enough room to swing a fully dressed ISX out and to the side without having to drag the truck out of the garage.

I ended up adding some pulleys and rope to the base to move left/right from the ground - and rolling hoist on it really comes in handy, even with the small working zone. Pulling turbos, fan hubs, etc. is so much easier with a "sky hook".

Sent you my permit company details and phone numbers today. They have offices across all time zones, which makes it handy to call in to check if a permit was issued but the office you deal with has closed.

I specifically only deal with that gal I sent you, permit order price is competitive, and she hasn't let me down in a decade. I send her a Xmas check every year. Helps out.

Not a chance I'd only be talking to/about just you. :)
But funny enough... I feel right at home here, so I'd have to include myself in that y'all. :)

Not so sure about that, @Cdemars316 , just tried to look it up and the only thing showing is the 1 Ton. I know they used to show the heavier one, but it's not coming up anymore...either not shipping them, or not selling them...maybe they had problems with them, but I'm not seeing anything on the HFT app, and whenever I try to look at it on the computer, it says there's an error in trying to bring up 'gantry'. :dontknow:

    Me too, that’s pretty impressive.

@Nostalgic Did you design that yourself?

Yes, after spending way too long online trying to find something pre-built that would work and hitting constant catch 22's. Plus none of the rolling gantry's that I saw looked like they'd feel very stable, let alone one person manageable, rolling with a 3k+ engine hanging on them. My concrete isn't perfect, and I didn't want to install steel tracks on the floor to trip over constantly.

The casters/wheels were probably the most expensive single line item from McMaster, but they run on ^ channel on top of the beams, just angle iron upside down. If you dig a little online, you can find general beam web specs and ratings and free engineering calculators. Something safe was my biggest concern - there's a lot of weight overhead just from the steel, and you add the force of an ISX swinging, it's pretty substantial. I built to minimal deflection on paper, and it handled it just fine. Ironically, the existing big red beam that looks massive? That's the choke point if it was static tested to failure.

If I used it daily or weekly, I'd have motorized both rolling directions and the hoist, but for my sporadic, occasional use, it functions, and is out of the way when not needed. I have...an aversion to heights - anything over a couple steps up a ladder and working with hands over head is a negative experience, so I rented a scissor lift to get the beams in place and assemble it.
