Someone good at writing could spend some time with Jolly Roger and probably write a good book . The places he's been, things he's seen. It could be done in a way that would appeal to lots more than just truckers.

I messed up and was trying to figure out where I messed up. I live in a gated community. Jill is my next door neighbor. When she first moved in, she was married to Zach. He drove a lifted and tricked out Jeep Wrangler with ZERO tread (see @sawmill comment on a Man dropping the ball.). Of course, this is none of my business (see @ElmerFudpucker comment about minding your business).
Jen is Jill’s 10 yr old daughter. I saw her and said hello. She told me that mom’s car broke down and she wasn’t able to go to school. I walked out and looked at Zach connecting battery cables for what was obviously an alternator job. They wouldn’t be able to afford an alternator for another week. I bought the alternator and installed it in nothing flat. No strings attached. Pay it forward. Jill is so ecstatic that she FaceTimes Jack and invites me for dinner that weekend when he gets in.
Jack starts telling me about his cartel connections (I lived in Mexico three years) and tries to be intimidating. Dude, you can’t afford an alternator, yet you’re trying to intimidate?
I finished eating and say my goodbyes. A couple days later, Jack is at my door apologizing for his behavior. He has his right arm in a cast. Apparently, he hit something and broke his hand, something that I haven’t done since I was a teen. My guess is to intimidate Jill.
Anyways, I don’t need drama and was trying to figure out where I went wrong. It was agreeing to the dinner.

Jack feels intimidated and insecure. Another man provided what he couldn’t. Basically cucked him. That’s all. It doesn’t matter what else you did. The fact that you rescued “his” woman and he couldn’t upset him. Then she invited you to supper was just flaunting that. (In his mind). Chances are you could have her, but why would you want her? She clearly makes poor decisions. Now if you just wanted a warm hole, sure. But to build a life with? No thanks.singlescrewshaker, CAXPT, Gatordude and 12 others Thank this.

I don’t think you went wrong anywhere, you were being a good man and a good neighbour. Refusing dinner could have been received as a sleight as well, some people can’t be helped. Don’t let it change you and your behaviour, you were spot on, need more good people to offset the”Jacks”Last edited: Sep 9, 2025

Or Jill wanted the jealousy and drama she knew would be the end result from a dinner invite.
