I better get it back in the shop and have a little look - it’s way too black and sooty to be engine oil.
I’m not set up well here for lifting it to get under and investigate.

I’m out of the good stuff - that poor jar of unappreciated joy - just sitting there, lost in Idaho.

Just an opinion and certainly not worth not taking it in but I think it’s soot out of the exhaust from condensation. Today in the snow before Justin come with the tractor my flatbed was dripping stuff out onto the snow. Naturally my heart sunk but after further investigation that’s all it was. From the pic that’s certainly what it looks like to meFeedman, cke, ElmerFudpucker and 9 others Thank this.

I went to Oil Trough many years ago, and right on thru...Came down from Batesville on 14. Was afraid the road had shrunk as I passed over it going in. Whuffo you leave Tuckerman to zigzag to Oil Trough?

At first opportunity (Annual, maintenance, busted hose or bad pump replaced and system flush) refill with Dexron II (or whatever it is now).
We used that in forklifts; operating in freezers, inside with an insulated charging room. Truck stayed out in the aisle, room for the chargers.
Didn't bring out unless had to, as condensation played hell with EV1/SCR controls. You will be using in cold weather.
If you are concerned, go price you some "Aircraft hydraulic fluid and then decide... -
My 5 point slow will leave a puddle of sooty water from the drain hole at the back of the resonator and from the stock muffler (when it was on there) and it looks a lot like that at times when it's really cold out.

A busted hose put me through my good stuff, low temp hydraulic fluid. Really seeing the difference with the “stuff that was lying around”. Will be doubling my strategic reserves in the future upon it’s replenishment
Added…… will have to check to see what exactly the sell us in those bottles. Will test and adjust as needed, thanks for the tipLast edited: Jan 26, 2026

That "crust" would have worked nicely as "top ice" on greens out of FL years ago.
Why could I have not had such weather.? -
Something else that strikes me odd about this round of weather is how well i manage the short term outings 30 minutes or so at a time in a standard pull over sweat shirt with a tee shirt under it. 10 ish degrees doesn’t seem to freeze me to death like i remember. I guess that’s humidity involved in some way?
