There is one advantage to being OTR with regards to not getting paid while off duty.
It's a bit off topic but I thought I would throw it in anyway.

If you are injured while off duty, like when you are on a 34 hour reset away from home, it should be covered under workman's comp.
I'm not sure if every state has the same law, so you may want to research it for your state.

Last year I was injured while walking in to the Love's to get ready for work. I was not on duty yet.
A misplaced step from being distracted led to me falling on my left knee and severing the quad tendon.
The insurance person for work comp told me that it would not be covered since I was not on duty at the time and it wasn't during my work shift, and so I was not 'at work' yet.
She said it was the same as if I had injured myself getting ready for work at home, so my personal insurance had to cover it.

A little research showed that in Wisconsin, which is where my home terminal is, any person required to be traveling for work is covered 100% of the time they are away from home for that work assignment.

There were some pretty substantial co-pays and deductibles that I would have been responsible for if my personal insurance had to cover it.
With work comp it is 100% covered.

And I might add that this is one time taking per diem will be a detriment.
Work comp bases what they pay you on your taxable income during the previous year.
Per diem reduces that by quite a bit.
