The title of this post is a bit of an assumption. I called two LTL companies, YRC and Old Dominion, and both of them said that they don't allow owner-operators to drive their own trucks when working for them. This gave me the impression that probably most LTL companies don't allow owner-ops to drive for them.

Do most LTL companies only have company drivers and not allow owner-ops to drive for them? If so, why do most LTL companies only have company drivers and not allow owner-ops to drive for them?

If YRC and Old Dominion are the only LTL companies that only have company drivers, why won't YRC and Old Dominion allow owner-ops to drive for them?

Why should they contract out work when they have their own labor force to keep busy?

I’d be hotter than a firecracker if I got screwed out of an extra run because they gave it to some owner op.

Man when I teamed with Estes NOTHING made us madder then when we were due to head back to St. Louis for the weekend, in Phoenix, waiting on a load for hours and here comes Covenant dropping and hooking a set for KC. 1/2 hour later here comes Covenant again dropping and hooking going to Indy. I don’t think it’s as bad now as it was then, but the explanation we always got was “we hafta pay those companies detention; we don’t you”.

IF YRC and/or Old Dominion have more freight than they have drivers, that would be a reason to contract out work when they have their own labor force to keep busy.

Why do most regular (non-LTL freight) trucking companies have both company drivers and owner-ops then?

I don’t know about “most”, but I do know my outfit doesn’t. We tried that once and it failed miserably, because no owner op wanted to work that cheap.

Is your outfit an LTL freight company?

Is the natural wage lower for LTL freight than non-LTL freight?
