She's doing better than most people in gig work but most people just scrape by and don't run it like a business. Probably no-one doing it has a proper health, dental or retirement plan, those are a cost too. It's easier to get into than trucking.

I also tell new drivers, be SMART, with your $. Let’s say you get into it and you realize it’s not something you’re gonna do for the rest of your career. do it for a couple of years, set yourself up, get debt free, maybe save and pay cash for a home etc then move into something else. If you’re smart, it’s a great way to set yourself up save some money quick.

    Came here to say this

If you know someone who can get you in the electrical job as an apprentice where you can get your own state license in five years , do it !
    That’s a license to print money .

just paid a licensed electrician and his helper $6k to do some basic wiring at my house that took them two days.

just paid a licensed electrician $5,500 to pull a permit , drive three hours , bolt my weatherhead and disconnect and panel on a pole , and drive three hours back home .
With the driving he had about 12 hours on the job , Probabaly 16 hours with the phone calls and internet stuff to pull the permit .

    that said ,
Some people just are born to be a trucker

I paid for my nephew to go to CDL class at the local community college,
After I paid for him to go to welding school and become a certified welder , he was really good welding aluminum, he worked for a while welding and just didn’t like it

so he started doing hvac , did that for a while and didn’t like it ,

And he got a job with a small regional heavy haul company . And loves it .

$30k first year in training ,
After training for 9 months they get 20% of the gross to the truck

    Made about $60k second year
Fourth year he made $97k , home every weekend and off about six weeks a year ,
He really loves doing heavy haul and oversize loads , he regularly does a 16 wide load from Maryland to Oklahoma .

the small company he works for doesn’t crank their trucks for less than $10 a loaded mile , so sometimes they get random unpaid vacations of a week here and two weeks there .

    he doesn’t mind those .
He lives in my spare bedroom when he’s not on the road . And works on his vintage cars in my driveway or garage . Or goes fishing or hunting , or whatever .

I enjoyed trucking when I was doing it .
But when I got in times were good .
    Trucking is like construction ,
When times are good, in the right place at the right time , you can make good money .
But like construction , when times are bad , you gotta go find a 9 to 5 Monday to Friday job with a steady salary .
I made good money and enjoyed it , but when times got tough and it was les and less profit every month , and we decided we wanted to start a family , I sold my truck and got a normal job with predictable hours and a lower , but steady , income .

    Didn’t know that .

but I do know that once you get the state license , it’s literally a license to print money .
