Very good explanation Hawk. I understand why PFJ have a check out line, your explanation is spot on.
But, a business that has the volume of customers and number of employes WM has should be able to keep the checkout lines short. As someone else said every employe should be trained to run a register so they can open registers for a short while as needed.
KMart did that many years ago when I worked there. There was a rotation list of all employess working that particular day, when needed you'd hear an annoucement "employee #232927 to register 8", unless you were with a customer you went up front for awhile.

We had self service registers at our WM then on one of my rare visits to WM they were gone. We do have a big problem with shoplifters, nearly everyday there is a newspaper report of a shoplifter being caught by a WM "loss prevention" employee.
I do use self serve at Sams b/c I dont buy that much in one visit. Sams has 4 self service register and its rare to see more than 2 being used. Probably b/c most have carts packed full and dont want the hassle of scanning every item. Sams has a person at the exit door to compare your receipt to whats in your cart, smart idea.

If there's a long line and one checkouter, I say LOUDLY, " How long does this line have to get before they call for help?" Then the people behind me run for the manager that just opened up....fml

There is one Wal-Mart in Midlothian, VA, where the only checkouts they have open at night are the self-checkouts

They used to do that but when they instituted the "task management" software it made it difficult because he you left your work area to assist it threw off your time if the manager in charge of you didn't note in the system that you went to assist. So if your task wasn't completed it looked bad on you.
