Count the pallets. I haven’t seen anyone mention this, other than saying breakdown with no other explanation.

You bring 24 pallets. They break it down to 40, 60, and I’ve seen loads that broke down to over a hundred pallets.

All because one customer wants 6 boxes of strawberry ice cream and 2 boxes of chocolate, while another wants 9, yet another 3. And you have 100 of JUST strawberry on 1 pallet.

You sit there, while they sort and restack your load based on their customers individual orders.

Breaking down of big wood onto small wood is the most time consuming possible.

If they wanted it stacked like that the shipper should have had it built like that in 10 trucks instead of just one.

We do a few pallets onto mixed sizes, depends on the product as to which pallets are used.

I took a drop to a reciever, I always asked how much and broke it down myself, the last time was a couple hundred cases on 80 odd pallets, many singles, the only way they could verify what was shipped, they no longer charge us to break it down there. Hehehe.

I worked at a refrigerated produce warehouse in socal, the drivers were typically in an out in a few hours. Except when the system would go down, we would have to stay on the clock till the system would come back online. I felt bad the one time the system was down for three days and all of the delivery drivers had to wait. CHP was writing tickets for drivers being illegally parked.

Cold Storage, Grocery, Meat and Chicken plants all rank at the top of the list of hurry up and wait. Honestly, I got so tired of it, I went dry van.

I also know that the carrier I'm leased to keeps track of places that jerk the drivers around and wastes time , and they are last resort for loads .

You're right about the meat and chicken plants, though Pilgrims Pride in Arcadia WI pleasantly surprised me by loading me in just under 3 hrs. If you go to JBS in MARSHALLTOWN, IA, you may as well go bobtail to the Walmart and get some good food. That's easily 10 hrs
