Question in title. I've noticed some drivers who are usually at least 30 minutes late are common, but stay on at a carrier for years...
Why don't drivers who are regularly late get fired?

Depends on the why of the late. Is it because they go through chicago? Is it because they are part of a relay? Are they otherwise safe reliable drivers and the company keeps them because they dont do a swift every 2 weeks? Do they cross wyoming a lot? Do they have a medical condition that they need to work around? Do they have a fixed route where a shipper or reciver are morons? Do they need to hand unload the truck? Are they forced to get fuel mid route?
And those are just off the top of my head.SoulScream84, Vic Firth, bzinger and 7 others Thank this. -
Another possible reason is the company’s turnover rate.

What position do you hold to notice these things?born&raisedintheusa, Texas_hwy_287, Magoo1968 and 10 others Thank this.

Yeah. Half an hour is only a problem at Walmart. We're expected to be time lords for them. The Green Mountain, bzinger, D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this.

They expect you to be on time without a T.A.R.D.I.S. or a flux capacitor?

Who cares about 30 minutes.
When you sit there for 5-10 hours to unload, for no pay, is 30 minutes going to bother you?bzinger, Deadhead-er, kylefitzy and 4 others Thank this. -
That's a good question, and why new drivers always get, and consequently destroy, new trucks? I suppose a new driver in an old truck isn't very smart. For the most part, in my 35 years, I can never remember being late, aside from weather or breakdown. A driver consistently late, indicates poor planning, and in MY company, you'd get ONE, then it would be hit the trail. I suppose, if they fire the person, who is going to deliver the load? The boss? It's something we as a nation just have to put up with, and ironically, with todays media, there's less of an excuse than ever to be late.

Are they late to show up at the yard? Late to leave? Late to arrive at the customer? Some kinds of late don't matter much, some are really important.
If the late drivers are staying with the carrier for years, being late must not matter to your boss. If it doesn't matter to your boss you're probably wasting your time worrying about it.Texas_hwy_287, Bean Jr., InTooDeep and 8 others Thank this. -
This was my first question as well. When I was active I had a hard enough job as it was taking care of me! Yet this person knows other drivers have a history of being late to the point of wondering why they still have a job. Man, it must be nice being omnipresent!SoulScream84, Bean Jr., Moosetek13 and 2 others Thank this.
