My guess is that they use the dog as they must get some kind of sweetheart deal regarding no-shows and cancellations. IE I am sure a ton of "driver recruits" never show up for the bus ride, and the dog must give them the companies the best deal.

It is different today. In the 60's a wide cross section of society took the bus; these days even the military flies recruits to basic.

Oh, what do you want for a $1. You have to stand in the aisle, though.( actually, if you book way in advance, you can get a seat for a buck)My daughter took a Megabus from Milw. to the cities once, no terminal, just picked her up on a side street downtown.( that was kind of weird) The driver was a real nice guy. I took a "silver dog" once many years ago in winter, and it was like 90 degrees on the bus. Everybody was hollering for the driver to turn the heat down, but he just stared straight ahead and drove the bus.

My last Greyhound ride was from TN to S. Sioux City, IA. I had to change buses in Chicago. We got to Chicago some 20 hours later as we went through every hick town in America. If they use a GPS they must go into options and select "Avoid Highways" and "Longest Route". :) Anyways, I got off the bus in Chicago and walked over to the other gate to get on my change over. I double checked the gate number as I see a bus pulling away. :biggrin_25521: This was in the morning and the next bus was later that night. @&*#%

I spent the day walking around looking at the Sears tower, staring at this and that, staring some more. They had picnic tables out back where everyone went to smoke cigarettes. Twice I was approached and asked if I wanted to buy some drugs. One guy had pot and the other had crack. No thank you! Lunch consisted of vending machine crap and hot dogs for dinner. The next bus was a Trailways which was better because they had TV monitors. At least I got to watch two movies the rest of the trip. When I got off in S. Sioux I vowed never to ride a bus again unless I was going with a bunch of old people to a casino. :) That was seven years ago. So far, so good!

Who wants to be on a bus for 10+ hours with the undesirables.. Definitely not me.

I actually made $60 by taking a flight to orientation instead of the bus. Booked it two weeks in advance.

Seriously, though Imagine how much money would go to waste if half of the drivers flown into orientation didn't make the cut.....

When one really thinks about it, the trucking companies are NOT required to pay for a potential employee's transportation to the terminal. The companies are realy being nice about it. It is coming out of their profits, not the taxpayers money, as in the military.

Problem is so many " drivers" are flat broke. No money (I don't know how the hell that even happens) and have to ride the bus to the next company they'll spend a month at. A plane ticket is relatively cheap when you think about it. A bus can take 2 days to get from NY to Indiana. A plane is a few hours. Without the homeless and the thugs hanging at the terminals.
