.... behind the wheel of a truck.

Dec of 88' I was 21, on active duty and checking off base in San Diego for transfer to the east coast. The day im leaving I get a message to call my brother. Turns out he's loading in Salinas and I change my flight so I can take my first ride across country.

So we're cruising across I-80 in Nevada and he's demonstrating all the details of shifting a 13, using the jake, etc. Next thing I know he stands up while holding the wheel and tells me I'm driving. We do a quick switch, he drops into the pass seat and for the next hour-ish he has me going up and down through the gears and hitting every exit to get a feel for the brakes. THEN he crawls in the bunk!

So there I am. Never driven anything with more than 4 gears or bigger than a 1962 IH 2.5 ton dump.

    1986 KW T600, 425 Cat, 13 spd.

And no, it was not the dumbest thing I've seen my brother do.in a truck.

    Let's just say I won't forget her...

    It seems like yesterday
    But it was long ago
Janey was lovely, she was the queen of my nights
There in the darkness with the radio playing low
And the secrets that we shared
    The mountains that we moved
Caught like a wildfire out of control
Till there was nothing left to burn and nothing left to prove...

January 2012 in trucking school. First drive was with the instructor who intimidated me for some reason. Anyway, drove bobtail and did such a lousy job shifting that he had me stop at a gas station so we could switch and he drove back.

About 1987, I was already working driving three ton Hinos around Edmonton. One night I went for a ride with my brother in a LTL9000 Ford with the old 13 speed that you just rotated the switch for both the range and splitter function. When he crossed the scale at Leduc, he pulled over and told me to switch seats. So I got to drive down to Red Deer and back.

Hmmm, well I'll admit the first one didn't last very long, a bit over three years. But the second one, lasted 18 years. Seemed like 118 years.:(
Been 23 years, so far, and it just doesn't seem even remotely possible. Seems more like a year or so.:);)
