They can appear closed, but won't be locked.

no they dont, you can always tell if it's not right
he needs to pay more attention to what the jaws look like when they're locked properly, if he knew his equipment like he should he would of caught it.

    truckdriver31 Thanks this.

Think happens to just about everyone once.

Did the same thing. Swore they were closed.

Starting moving and she came loose. Caught it before it got off the tractor.

Like others have said, cranking that dude up with 44K in the box will learn you something lol.

Yes, I said I saw jaws closed and didn't tug it. My mistake almost cost me . I looked at jaws twice, had to look twice cause had to grab flashlight to verify

If it has one. Mine is an auto-adjust and doesn't have one like in the old days.

If the king pin is sitting on top of the 5th wheel jaws it will pass the tug test. You need to make sure there is no space between your trailer and your 5th wheel. I have seen many drivers loose their trailers this way. This won't help you if other drivers don't do this. But leave 2" between the landing gear leg and the ground. It will also help you from not busting your butt trying to lower the landing gear on a loaded trailer after you hook up
