What if - just saying, that - theoretically, not that this is at all true - but if what I’m proposing were to happen -

Long as he is running on his hours, yes it’s legal and is on company insurance as a driver, and company says it’s ok.

 

1st off, if you've got an eld, whoever is driving the truck (I'll assume its a multi-truck co) will have to log into his logbook on the device in your truck to use his hours, you will then be logged out under whatever line you chose beforehand.

If you think you're going to game the eld, put it on line 2 and roll the 3hrs to your terminal, you'd be wrong because the eld knows when the truck is moving and it kick you onto line 3.

That's the long and short of it.

Out of hours scenario was a regular occurrence when I was local. Every week there would be at least 3 or 4 drivers that ran out of hours and couldn't make it back to the yard. A manager would drive the company pickup to get them. Manager would drive back to base logged into the elog and the out of hours driver would drive the pickup.

Other times there were more out of hours drivers than managers so two drivers would head out in a company tractor to rescue the driver.

They were rarely more than a couple hours away though.
