Work a year for someone else first before you buy your own truck. Every trade has it's quirks. Let someone else pay for you to learn the first year. You might also discover you can't stand trucking after a few months. That would such if you already bought a truck.

If you do that, with your business experience, I suspect you will do fine if the trucking lifestyle agrees with you.

    Good Luck!

    Thanks very much Farmerbob1,
Yes, for sure, decide if I like it before I buy.

I guess my first challenge is getting that first job. That's where I'm at right now. Trying to find out where to look, and if anyone has any warnings about places not to go, or leads on places to start looking.

    Farmerbob1 Thanks this.

As a carpenter who is in decent shape, you have two things going for you if you decide to try flatbed work. It isn't uncommon to need to build simple securement equipment for odd shaped loads, pipe, etc, and as a carpenter you can probably knock out wooden frames faster than most, after you learn about securement practices.

If you do get into trucking, try get a truck that has an extra rocker switch on the dash. Then, you’ll have a spot for some accessory you may want. I have mine hooked up to what I like to refer to as the:

    “Big Maude Caller”

It’s sort of a safety beacon, if you will. One push of the button and it’s Big Maude to the rescue with the Frank Mobile.

Get with a tank hauling company. Never has load missing. I haul milk. I run 5-7 days then home 2. Pay around $850 net a week. Company is out of UT No east coast crap.
You need to learn the sloshing part, yet not as bad as others say. Just be careful as any load.
