Shipper told me not to tarp it. And it wasn't a big place so I had to leave and clear out of the way.

So, it turns out tarping isn't as easy as it looks. This will be my first tarp job.

My tarps are heavy, wet and muddy from yesterday's rain. Today it is windy, unfortunately.

I don't think I can lift that tarp over my head to unroll it from the top like how I was trained. I can feel my back straining too much like I might pull a muscle.

Do those straps have to be over or under the tarp? Or does it matter?

Wish I didn't have to because I won't be able to keep an eye on that load going down the road. But dispatch says I have to do it. It's like a marble type of material.

    Any pro tips are appreciated.

Ahhh! A frames ! Ur dispatcher is an ### . First tarp load they give you a frames? Such a dick move.

Ur gonna need blankets or something those corners of the marble because it will rip in about 15 miles if you don't. Sharp edges.

I would give delivering customer a call and see if they want it tarped. Unless dispatch is willing to buy you New tarps.

A frames might be the one exception to the rule where it better to tarp before strapping. But me personally I don't throw straps over tarp...

So best thing to do if you can't lift tarps over and it actually needs to be tarped, is unfold tarp on ground to where it's lined up with the freight you wanna tarp. Attach rope to the drings. Then throw over to the other side and pull the tarp over that way.. It will be easier on this load because the tarp can ride right on the straps...

but like mentioned before, you are going to need protection on those sharp corners or all of your hard work is going to be pointless in about 15 miles

I don't have any blanket protectors. I have been keeping an eye out for stuff at customers like carpet and such.

But so far I haven't turned anything up.

Understandable. The only thing is, you won't have any tarps left if you don't use protection. I would talk to your dispatch about that.tell them you don't have anything to protect your tarps and the freight is going to destroy them.... If you wanna know what I would do personally, is call the delivering customer, ask if they need it tarped... which the answer is most likely going to be No... and then I would start rolling down the road regardless of what dispatch says... they aren't the ones that have to deal with the problems.... But that's just what I would do... you make your own decision...

If you really have to tarp it then it's going to be difficult if you have no rope to get the tarp over. Don't hurt yourself trying to lift the tarps over your head.

The customer told me they want it tarped because it goes through the Rocky Mountains and during the weathery months that stuff can get awfully dirty.

I can understand that. None of us were assigned blanket protectors though.

I'll let dispatch know. Thanks for the heads up. I would have just tarped it not realizing it would get cut.

Ok so you are going to have to get creative then. The best thing you can do with what you have to work with is to move those straps and edge protectors.. So the front one move it up to the very edge of that marble. Do the same with the back strap as well. On the back piece it may not be possible because your strap will be over the tire.. So may just have to take your chances with it being unprotected.. That's about the only thing I can think of that will soften your edges ...

To get your tarps over the top of them . I would try the rope trick I mentioned.. If you don't have any rope.. Tie a 2 inch strap to a dring.. Make like 4 knots and throw the hook side over then pull.. Try and tie off multiple straps to multiple areas of the tarp so you don't put all pulling power into 1 dring... you could even use your winch bar and hook strap hooks on them and pull all straps at the same time.

That's my best ideas I can come up with on this one... Maybe @Espressolane @beastr123 @God prefers Diesels @shooter19802003 has some better ideas

I know it’s pretty amateur but I don’t mind throwing a strap over the front of a tarp to know it’s not going to move.

For protection, go to any carpet store and I bet they’ll let you empty their dumpster. They have to pay to haul that stuff away so the more you take the better for them.

Hey - realize you’re a company driver, but if it were me I’d run it as it is - and swing into a truck wash before reciever and clean off any road filth.

I never had blankets either, last time I hauled those I took extra edge protectors and covered them in duct tape, then taped them to the corners. As far as getting the tarps over, @D.Tibbitt gave the best advice possible

It won't move if you get it tight enough. I've been round and round on this strap over tarp carousel before. I refuse to go down the rabbit hole again :biggrin_25523:
