The ATA and the companies they represent have very deep pockets, they will never let the legislation pass.

    I have a better idea.

    Let's raise the minimum wage.

    More is better.

and that's EXACTLY what i "see" happening if mandatory OT gets in.

companies are running close to the skin now as it is. sure, many are making a profit, but if they have to share that with the workers, the CEO's can't get a new limo, or an extra mistress on the side.

they will "most likely" be making workers go home before the OT clock gets close.

they may even have one shift of workers come in early in the AM, go home in the early afternoon, and another crew come in, to pick up the rest.

or "part time" a high percentage of the workers, union or not. companies can be flexible, is in most if not all contracts.

Remember, for every dime the government claims they get the voters in increased pay, they get a cut of, but they call it taxes. The more the company has to pay you the driver, the more the gubbermint takes out in taxes. If the private contractor had to pay the general contractor his cut just to get the job, it would be a crime...but Uncle Sam always gets his kickback and it's perfectly legal.

Truck drivers the only group of people who will vote against a pay raise.

there’s a reason other industry are regulated in how they pay and when they get overtime. It sure is terrible for them isn’t it lol

I’m fine with getting paid by the mile actually, if, and this is a big if, companies honor accessory pay. If I lose a day driving because I sit eight hours waiting to get unloaded or loaded, the company should pay me for that. No question ask. No arguments, no begging, no court case, if my truck breaks down no fault of my own and I’m sitting in a dirty nasty truckstop for two days waiting for it to get fixed I should get paid for that. Anything out of my control it takes miles away from me the company should pay for. Then I think it would be fair. I have yet to work for a company like that. Yes they pay me sometimes but not all the time.

As OTR drivers do we work for free out here? You bet we do. 20 to 30 hours a week probably on average. Totally free, totally for the company, but we do get a decent check if we get miles. So if anything out here takes away from us getting those miles we should get compensated for it. That would be a fair trade off in my opinion

overtime pay doesn't mean workers will earn more. it may give managers incentive to work people less and find ways around paying overtime pay.

this is why i enjoyed cents per mile pay, i didn't have to worry about none of that. another group of workers may want to work less may prefer overtime paying companies. i think variation in ways to pays workers gives workers more freedom to pick the type of style that may suit them and their needs, wants and DESIRES.

This legislation has less chance of becoming a law than the ATA's legislation to make L/O mandatory for all drivers. The greatest protection from being exploited is to tell employers who try to exploit you to pound sand. There's plenty of driving jobs out there and some of them actually pay enough to live on and don't force you to live on a truck. If you choose to get paid by the mile, work for free or take a job where you have to drive while wearing a wig and a dress that's on you.

That’s exactly what I expect to happen when I see something like this. Or companies will just move the linehaul drivers to the normal P&D hourly rate, which would be a significant pay cut when I’m averaging $45/hr right now on cpm.
