Well, the UAW is a special case, Ill give you that, but blaming the guy who's installing parts made in China & Mexico and designed by someone with an 8 year college degree is foolish. And I don't hold anything against a guy who wants nice things, supplied by a good wage, for a company that routinely makes millions upon millions of dollars.
If you're basing your whole anti-union stance on the UAW, that's a very short-sighted view, as the trade union boys earn their dollar by-and-large. Good union wages help non-union employees as well. A rising tide lifts all boats.

My family members were URW. A friend of mine was also a union member for the city of Akron, and not by choice.(Not sure what union) When one of his co-workers did something wrong(they weren't sure which person in his department actually did it), they blamed the entire night shift and terminated all of them, and when they went to the union to file a grievance against the city for it, the union did NOTHING to help them.
When I first moved to FL, there was a company called Occidental Chemical who had phosphate mines and a processing plant in the area. Their workers were union and went on strike. The guy who's job was pushing a broom in the shop wanted $30/hr (this was 20+ years ago). The company ended up laying off almost everyone and because of that it devastated the economy for a bunch of small towns surrounding it. They ended up selling that division to a British company, and has now been sold to another phosphate corporation.
Unions by and large are very similar to an organized crime syndicate, only legalized by the government. "Do what we say or you'll pay"... I have seen more harm than good caused by today's unions, and feel that all unions should be illegal and nobody can say anyting that will change my opinion on them. They're nothing more than legalized extortionists. When unions 1st started, they did help a lot of workers, but there is a huge difference between what they were then and what they are today.
Just because a company is profitable and makes millions(or billions) is no excuse to go on strike and hold the company hostage for a higher pay just because you feel like they need to give up some of their profits. If that's the case, then it should work in reverse, when the company takes a loss, then those striking workers should take an appropriate drop in pay. Personally I feel that if a worker doesn't like what they're being paid, quit, and find a better paying job. Or else get a bunch of their coworkers together and start their own company and see how hard being a successful corporation is.Last edited: May 8, 2025

Never understood the going on strike...employee knew what pay was , working conditions and task requirements...before taking the job...and was ok to get hired..wages lost during a strike...take years to be made up..if at all .....with the pay increase...if job is that bad...just leave...and work somewhere else...nobody is forcing you to staybrian991219, Lonesome, D.Tibbitt and 3 others Thank this.

Strikes are when contract negotiations aren't going anywhere. Like every x amount of years the union and company negotiate contract terms. If they don't reach a deal by a certain time, a strike is called. It's not the floor worker making a few bucks an hr "whining", it's usually the ceo/executives refusing to give up some crumbs.Friend and Gearjammin' Penguin Thank this.

". That makes a lot more sense...and you pay union dues to have the privilege of doing this? Guess what, you can find a new, better paying job FOR FREE.

My dad was a school teacher. His district went on strike for 6 weeks but he was one of handful of teachers that didn't agree with the strike and went to work anyways. He got paid for the six weeks while the ones on strike did not.
When it was settled the school board agreed to pay the back wages the teachers on strike didn't receive. My dad received the same back wages as all union members did. He got double pay basically.Friend, Lonesome, Knucklehead and 3 others Thank this. -
