Simply due to the fact that not everybody driver has their passport, you may be eligible for loads other cannot have, so it can help keep you moving. However, in two years, I've only been twice. To Harrow, Ontario. Not even an hour from thr border. It pays an extra 16 cpm for the entire load for me. If you have time to get yours it can't hurt. It's like having another endorsement, and if you don't want canada loads anymore just cancel it.

One thing to keep in mind if you do go to Canada, they have slightly different HOS regs that you have to comply with. The biggest difference I always had to watch is a mandatory 24 consecutive hours off duty within a 14 day period. Unless they changed it.
Bud A. Thanks this. -
It depends on if your company goes to Canada. My tanker company wanted drivers to have passport & TWIC. I used TWIC twice in 3 years at same customer and passport never, but we were dedicated to 1 shipper, not OTR. Passport is essentially unimportant for most general freight haulers.lual Thanks this.

You can get a FAST PASS for 50 bucks, I think its a little cheeper than a full passport, Good for Canada and Mexico, although I would not reccomend driving a 18 wheeler into Mexico.lual Thanks this.

I'm going to sound very impressionable and dense, but since I've never been to mexico I'd like to ask how hyped up the danger level is. The last news story I saw about advisories in mexico was the incident of the two older women who were found shot to death in their van as they were traveling through Mexico, and they were US citizens. The officiate was a Hispanic woman who adv not to travel after dark or off the main highway. There was no apparent motive for these women being targeted. They weren't wealthy and they were in their 50s and 60s I believe.
Have there been incidents of truckers being run off the road by the cartel?201 Thanks this. -
This is an old story from 2020, but I don't think it has gotten any better since then.

Mexico is full of corruption. There is no reason to go there in a truck, and if visiting youre only somewhat safe in tourist areas as an american...ask yourself why so many people risk their lives to leave that country and come to america...tscottme, lual, Milr72 and 1 other person Thank this.

I have a neighbor that lived in Mazatlan and said it was the most wonderful place to live. The people were friendly, she was appalled to hear of what Americans views were on Mexico. I think Mexicos situation is blown out of proportion, can't have a place better than the USA, so let's trash it. Same with Cuba. I heard nothing but bad, my son went there, and had a wonderful time. I saw that news story too, come on, man, it's dirty laundry, this country any bargain? DON'T,,,believe the news, it's all a crock!Mega Express Thanks this.

I would encourage you to get your passport, but check to make sure you are admittable into Canada. With a felony conviction or misdemeanor DUI or weapons convictions, they are not going to let you in.
tscottme Thanks this.
