I resisted buying a gps for many years, until my last company put the rand McNally e-log/GPS in the trucks(kind of a cheapo Qualcomm), I used to rely on calling customers for direction and referring to the truckers atlas and sometime google maps. When I switched to GPT I picked up a tnd530, it does come in handy for referencing my progress since I do a lot of coast to coast to coast hauls, but it's still no substitute for common sense and keeping an atlas handy. Sometimes the GPS has a habit of selecting screwed up routes.
GPS on Windshield.

I think it's better to have one in front of my face than looking somewhere else that eliminates peripheral vision, and the hood obstructs my view more than that, so whatever (the suction cup stopped working so mine's all over the place).

mine sits in the cubby. i don't need it staring me in the face so i can look at it all day and night. i only need a 1/2 second glance once in awhile.
truckon Thanks this. -
Yup, quick glance till you need it again. And its not like everyone of them doesn't say the directions out loud for you. Lol

I must have a thing for pink roads.

I just have to go back to my point of the advantage the Points of Interest being the most valuable feature of my GPS. Say my check engine light comes on for for whatever reason-- I can touch POI and Destination/Truck Dealer and it will show me a list of dealers closest to my destination. So I route to the that dealer using the Multi-Stop feature to see and set up a new search for Hotels at that new destination say just incase the shop cannot get me out the same day. Can also look up rental cars and casinos, gas stations (for my gas APU) airports, hospitals, restaurants, shopping Walmarts, banks you just about name it.
I like to use the Truck Tools/Quick Planner feature to get an idea of mileage between major cities--say I have 20 hours left on my 70 I do a radius search and can tell a broker where I'd like to go.
Also has Timers and Logs feature that can track two odometer readings and two maintenance distance readings. I use ODO 1 for my daily mileage, can quickly look and see how far I have gone for the day and ODO 2 for my fuel distance since last fillup.
I set Maint 1 at 17,000 miles and Maint 2 at 22,000 miles, each will alert me 2,000 miles before then.
Running up in Canada I set the speed display at Kilometers per hour and it has kept me out of trouble.
Yes there were many times I followed the little blue line and cussed out the GPS for taking the very first exit opportunity when it would have been so much easier to go down 5 more miles to the exit and right turn into the customer gate rather than sit through 42 red lights in town.truckon Thanks this. -
I miss my old air starter, early in the morning when a guy is half awake walking past your truck you could give him a nice wake up call!!! -
air starters, wolfman jack........whats next, twin sticks and air wipers??? oh my!! lol

I always check routing with my iPhone or laptop before taking off, I can then determine what is best to do based on road conditions, traffic, etc. I also plug in the address to the qualcomm navigo GPS thing and let it play its little game. I don't necessarily follow it exactly, but make it redo the route as I diverge from it. As a backup, routing, changing road conditions, traffic, construction slowdowns, etc is always available on the iPhone at any time. Nice thing is.... all of this is totally free. No desire or need to buy a dedicated GPS. The qualcomm screen is easy to see, and I don't even really look until it hollers at 5 mile, 2 mile, and 1 mile increments that a turn or change is coming.
