"Need"?? Well for starters.............gps is a tool to have in your kit........it's not THE tool, the mother of all must have can't live without tools........and most truckers today have some version of a gps with them. Secondly, they are darn handy for keeping track of your IFTA mileage. Weather, traffic, lots of neat stuff available that's not in the MC atlas. I do NOT think anyone should blindly trust or use a gps exclusively.......but they are a great tool to have and use.

Yeah, it is just one of a series of tools. Just because I have been commercial driving over 3 decades doesn't mean I am going to live in the past. No map is going to show me current road conditions, accidents, traffic delays, construction zones, etc like my iPhone is going to thru a series of apps. And another set of apps that can show me weather radar maps so I can plan of what is ahead and maybe avoid by taking a modified route. And no map is going to show me a satellite view of the area I am going so that I can plan to get there the evening before and take a break in a location near my delivery or pickup if I cannot stay at the customer themselves for a break.

yeah, I just want to live on a rand mcnally map, use only pay phones, and the way we did things last century.... NOT!

I got some that Future Glue from the truck stop and glued the plastic nest mount to the headboard above the steering wheel over 4 years ago. Click the GPS unit in there and it is like a heads up display -- quick glance up to see speed or how many miles to the next junction in the road or whatever, no need to turn my head and peripheral (sp) vision away from the road to see what is going on with the GPS unit.

Can modify the route while driving many different ways like Avoid or Allow Tolls and Freeways, Shortest or Fastest route then use the calculator to see if the extra miles around the toll will cost me more or less than paying the toll stuff like that. Much safer up there because my eyes are always seeing the road, my hand is braced agains the headboard to touch the screen rather than reaching all the way up to the dash or beyond up to the windshield like in my rookie days- stretching out the seatbelt and being way out of central position in the drivers seat and losing every mirror just made it too unsafe to mess with while driving.

This is going to sound stupid but sometimes it will help me get back on the freeway lol. Sometimes I will pull off the freeway and jump in the sleeper. 10 hours later I'm ready to go but for the life of me I can't remember if I should go left or right out of the truck stop. Sometimes the wrong choice can put you 20 miles behind. Quick zoom out on the GPS shows the freeway over there to the right lol 'oh yeah duh, I came in from that way last night now I remember where I am'.

I'm surprised they don't have a regulation about which side of your body you're supposed to sleep on, or what angle to lean at while putting on your shoes.....

I got a GPS but it gives me a really headake and have to turn it off.
Great for foggy and bad weather.
But it can give you a bad headake from the lack of external radio or micro wave whip.

I always rode with the GPS on my left hand side, all the way to the left and gently resting on the dash board while suctioned cup to the windshield. Never had any problems. It's out of the way, provided the information I wanted while leaving my whole windshield available for a clear view.

  9. All states have quirks on mounting on the inside of a windshield. Ive been reading and told that" it can not be anyplace the wipers move across your windshield."

Now that being said. You have a 6" border around a windshield that is for tint, thus if you can put the suction at the bottom left inside that 6". Or passengerside. 6". You have a chance.

Not this is not the golden rule. Don't be throwing up that monster P.O.S 7" computer screen they call a GPS. On your dash or windshield.

The GPS is a crutch, and very very bad crutch to be hooked on.

    Try this once.

Shut off your GPS at a shipper, and figure your way out of the parking lot to the highway. If your going into withdrawals your addicted.....

Give it time, they probably will..., they are already trying to push in cab cameras and sleep monitors on us.
