Those Love's clerks aren't any more sincere about the "How are you doing?" than the fake answer of "Fine" they get out of most drivers. But my favorite answer to give them to that question is "Delusional" Some of them are confused by it and the rest turn around and get their phone out so they can google the definition.

I am not sure why some places ask for a name. Last night I ordered, order taker asked for my name, told them it was Sancho, I get an odd look, repeats back my name, then spells it. They prepare my order an they call out a number, not a name. I walk up and asked why they take names if they are calling numbers. The response "It asks for it and we can't take your money unless you give us your name". I said, why not just put any name in there, response "It is asking for your name, not any name". I turned and walked away, they want $15 an hour?

It's an effort to make the experience more personable and personal like back in the olden 1950's America where fast food was just getting started, everyone in the little towns knew each other's name. In the America we live in now we are largely anonymous to one another.

It is said the average person today sees more people daily than our great great grandparents saw in their whole lifetime. It's very telling that people are offended to be asked their name so their impersonal fast food order can be personally announced.
