I don't think eld mandate will improve safety on roads. Always there will be hacking attempts with success, different ways to manipulate logs, ...
higher safety values can be reach by creating more parking spaces along interstates in every states and by removing bad one's from trucks.

The ELD software programmers are mandated to keep a log of all changes done to the logs by anyone, and they are subject to audit. The audit log is required to show the date, time, IP address, userid, and what the original values on the record were, and what they were changed to. I found this out when I was at FMCSA last year. They were looking at some changes done to an ELD a few days before an accident. I was there to show them how we could make the logs easier to search.spyder7723 and mhyn Thank this.

But in an audit, the dot inspector will look at all those edits. Better have a plausible explanation for them.Last edited: Nov 4, 2016
mhyn Thanks this. -
It never has been about safety. That was a smoke screen from the outset. It has only been about compliance with the HOS. Pure and simple. And nothing they can do will improve safety in any substantive way. Only drivers themselves can improve safety in how they do things. No ELD can force a driver to drive when they are tired. No ELD can force a driver to do stupid things around traffic, follow 10 feet off the back of a van full of kids at 65 mph, etc, nor can any ELD stop that kind of stupid driving. All it can do is log time.peterd, spyder7723, mhyn and 1 other person Thank this. -
But we should lower the interstate driving age, to increase the pool for the megas. That's garanteed to increase safety.

The real shortage is as the baby boomers retire, and the older gen X. The younger gen x and millinials have been brainwashed to think they all need a 4 year financed degree, and will be a CEO by the time their gonads drop and they grow hair down there. The trades are suffering today, and the rest of the blue collar jobs will follow.
The reality is, most will be $125k or more in debt, not a CEO, and have a few kids running around while working at their local burger joint or megastore, making $30k a year and trying to figure out why they are not a CEO yet. -
There won't be a need for auditors since ELD is infallable. The only time there would be a need for an audit is after an injury or fatality crash which ELD is designed to prevent. Well, that's how the government thinks. They can save billions by not paying auditors to check logs .
The reality is, notwithstanding this fine group of people who post on TTR surely, but the reality is these drivers on ELD are aggressive and dangerous. They see that time ticking down on the go box and push that pedal to the floor everywhere they go. I was just on I88 this AM, some portions at 45 miles per hour getting smoked at high speed by truckers who felt it was silly to do 45 in a work zone in thick fog.
That's just a small example but I see stuff every day out here. More than the perceived problem of time ticking down, is the Man keeping these drivers running on a hamster wheel mentality where they're basically living paycheck to paycheck. They want to get ahead they have to produce as much as they can in in a short a time span as they can. The reward is a couple hundred bucks, the risk is really only the time they have left that their heart will still beat til it stops if they kill someone, since they don't have any real money to be sued for after a fatality crash.DSK333 and double yellow Thank this. -
the speed limiters mandate is on the way to slow them down..DSK333 and scottied67 Thank this.

No amount of legislation cam prevent people from making bad choices. This isn't new.
Eld won't affect dot audits in any way other than making them faster and easier.
What Man? That's the excuse broke people use to excuse their bad financial habits. The only one keeping a guy on that hamster wheel is the one that looks back at him in the mirror.
