Salt Lake City area

They have a decent dedicated account over there that pays round trip. But i imagine the list is quite long. The rocky mountain region just isn't very good for freight of any kind. Well be tough for a guy that only wants to be gone a day or two. But hey, if i can figure out how to do it in Florida, you can figure it out over there.

 

Possibly lanes into california. lot of sheet rock out of vegas area baled hay into cali from southern utah, rates probably not great.

No Tarps for me.....But I can say for a fact, SLC is hub that goes west most of the time. Going in was easy, getting out was usually going to Oregon or California in the winter snow.

 

Cheap freight up there

 

Stay out of SLC and the west coast. Stick to the Midwest and some of the southeast. Do not go any further north than Virginia unless the load really really well. Trust me on this.

Here is why. Many of the loads that come from the west coast are hidden, saved or covertly dispatched for their favorites. There are a ton of back room buddy hustling that goes on. I mean a ton of it. Many drivers (especially the ones on here) will have you subscribe to some secret formula or strategy to get loads. There is so much buddy hustling going on owner operators are leaving in droves. Why do you think Mercer has such an insane advertising campaign, and has such a huge revolving door with O/O. DOnt forget that the vast majority of the loads you can see are nothing more than regurgitated loads from the DAT, CH Robinson and UTI load board.....to name a few. The best part is there are Swift, JB Hunt and Schneider flatbed loads on there. And yup....Mercer will take a piece before serving you something you could of gotten off a load board yourself. Are there some brokers that actually look for shippers....yes.....but they are few. And the choice loads are saved and given to favorites. Its that simple.

Also....there are a lot of retirees that live in CA that just sit at home and wait for a load heading back to the east coast. When they get to the east coast they load back west to go home and sit and wait at home.

My advice....stay off the west coast period! Also stay out of Texas by El Paso unless you want to pull cheap ATVs from Can Ams yard ( in Clint Tx) for $1.21 per mile with 4-5 stops!

You probably can tell that I am not a Mercer Koolaide drinker. I am telling you the hard truth.

 

Yes el paso sucks. You can pull cheap atvs or bounce 150 miles and get 1.70 a mile to st louis with no extra stop. Personally i will make that bounce and never look back others will sit in El paso and ##### there is nothing but cheap multi stop atvs. Guess that makes me a koolaid drinker.

 

It's decent if you go west. Everything eat is cheap no matter what the name on the side of the truck. Once you cross the Mississippi River rates go down. Fact is there is much more industry easy of the Mississippi, therefore higher demand.

 

TBH El Paso stinks. No if ands or buts about it. If you lived in SLC you might find it not so bad. You wouldn't have to worry about any of that sitting at home stuff. Loads out of SLC are usually on the cheaper side but super light and once you know where to go and where not to go, can line you up for some really great runs. And if you live there you will get to know the local agents. Some really nice ladies that will help you out a lot. Good luck no matter what you do.
