So, I'm driving along in a 2017 Crapcadia and the collision avoidance system activated the brakes when it thought the freeway sign was an obstacle. I shudder to think if this happened on wet or icy roads. It's beeped before but never actually applied the brakes. Is anyone else having this problem?

Those systems scare me. I hear of that stuff happening. I also wonder what happens when something legitimate happens, the truck decides to slow down when the driver decides to turn to avoid the problem and the combination of turning and slamming on the brakes causes a loss of control.rank and QuietStorm Thank this.

This my friends is why computers will not replace drivers completely, At least not in our lifetime.
Dave_in_AZ and rank Thank this. -
Yeah, I've been staying off cruise more and more because of that. I've never had it engage without cruise on even when tailgating.

Newer systems are better than the 1st gen, but mine still kicks on occasion. Has yet to prevent a potential accident, but has almost made me wreck.

I have that system also. And just like yours, it does beep at overpasses. But it does'nt brake for stationary objects.
It did scare me couple times when making a turn on a multilane ramp and slower cars in the lane next to me showed up on that thing and auto-braking was applied HARD.QuietStorm Thanks this. -
on wet or icy roads just turn off the cruise completely and it won't be hitting the brakes when you don't want it to

I even turn it off in heavy traffic on dry roads. the worst situation I've seen is where somebody is cutting a cross from the left lane to take an exit right in front of you...so they're hitting their brakes at the same time if they're Crossing in front of you...the sensors pick up on that speed reduction and hit the brakes.
you saw the whole thing coming and we're covering your brakebut the computer didn't know that.
I only turn on cruise when I'm on Open RoadQuietStorm Thanks this. -
Wrong. Cruise off completely, and if that "onguard" radar catches a moving car in front of you or in the lane next to you it will still apply the brakes.
I test mine specifically for this scenariobentstrider83, Toomanybikes, daf105paccar and 1 other person Thank this. -
My Wingman system would randomly track exiting vehicles after they left the lane in front of me and panic brake...or when I just let the adaptive cruise keep pace with another vehicle that was only slightly slower than my governed truck.. it would get sick of playing follow the leader after 20 or so miles and just panic brake for no reason. Oh, and it's distance is inaccurate. It starts beeping at what it thinks is 1.5 seconds. I have counted 4-mississippi between the time the vehicle passes a point and my truck gets to it. So, my company had me go to the dealer for calibration. Now, it panic stops at random traffic lights, exit signs, guardrails on ramps with curves. It has gotten so irratic that it is in danger of me adjusting it with my ckaw hammer, then I would plead insanity as a defense. And if random snow flurries pop up, it throws warnings on the dash about being obstructed. And don't get me started on how dangerous it gets on bumpy roads. If this is the same stuff they are using on these driverless trucks, God help us!!!
Toomanybikes Thanks this.
