There is really no comparison between Koch and cotc. When you call cotc with a problem, whoever you speak with may have 10 other problems they are dealing with at that exact moment, but you would never know it. They treat you like yours is the only problem and you are their only driver. And for all this tarp talk, that may be an issue at other companies, but at cotc I have never needed help from a fellow driver and not received it. Not once. Not when it was -10 with a -45 wind chill. Not when it was 115 in Phoenix.
I was having an issue with my tarps and two other drivers stopped on the shoulder and helped retarp my load. 14 feet tall and very awkwardly shaped. It was 12 degrees with 50mph gusts in Wyoming.
After working at cotc, even the companies I tried after swift seem like swift. Something gets ####ed up with a load or a shipper is taking their sweet ### time, Koch will tell you thats trucking. Cotc will call the shipper and tell them you pull you to the head of the line and get you loaded or youre leaving.
And it is absolutely nothing for cotc to cancel a contract with major customers for wasting time. As a matter of policy they won't let any one customer comprise more than 10% of their business, because they dont want to be beholden.
Tell in ya... Y'all can be worried about tarping all you want. I went and filed my taxes today, still covered in tarp grime and wearing high viz. The lady doing my taxes looked at me like I was straight trash until she saw what I made this year and she saw what I put into retirement this year and saw 18,000 tax free dollars on my w2 from the per diem. I thought she was about to come sit on my side of the desk next to me.
People who work at cotc are proud to work there. And they are some of the highest paid and best treated drivers on the road. It shouldn't even be a debate.
I wasnt even in the top 10% of pay either. I went home all the #### time.QuietStorm and Truckermania Thank this. -
Unfortunately, I was on a time crunch, and I decided to go with Koch because of the %50 preloads, basically no tarping, and the ability to pick where I want to go. Currently, I've been driving with them for only a few weeks, but they seem to have a lot of the same issues as most companies. I'll update on whether or not I should have went to COT when I've got more experience here.

Alright, an update is warranted now.
For the gig itself: hauling generators for Cummins straight out of their Minnesota place. still snow in april. Not a big deal for me but worth mentioning for someone else.
The good: all chained down and tarped if necessary when you pick it up. You pick which load you want, if you're new you get bottom of the barrel, but they're still not bad; mostly going places that no one else wants, like the northwest during a blizzard which shuts down the Dakotas until every single snowflake is off the road. Tops out at .54 a mile, plus securement pay, plus tarp pay. Overall the account has the potential to be one of the best in the nation, period.
Why it's not: Koch is mainly a van company, and they run their flats like vans. The tractors aren't specialized for open deck, the trailers are 53' sliding spread axles with only two settings, for some god forsaken reason. No headache racks, all securement equipment belongs to the trailer, trailers have a #### header board that just makes life difficult. The BIG problem is dispatch, which are also your load planners, which also don't come from an open deck background, which means they don't make good decisions about loads getting you back to Cummins. Also, if you're on this account you will moonlight the federal ammunition account, which is about the same as the Cummins account, except the return loads are usually substantially worse. You really have to pay attention to what yourey getting paid. Low miles. Trucks governed at 65 for the first year or so, or if you go to Canada. No per diem.
Since I've been here, I've only averaged about 2000 miles a week, maybe less, and I'm not a lazy driver. If they had the miles I could pull over 3500 a week, even in their slow, weak trucks, but they just don't. So I'm going to move on.
COTC is probably a better choice. But if you're new to open deck or driven crazy by sitting and not making money, you could probably do alright here if you make it through the newbie phase.Bud A., Gearjammin' Penguin and Truckermania Thank this. -
I spoke to one of the COTC drivers that was waiting on his glass load the other day. He said he is on salary pay, so detention and layover are irrelevant to him. I don't know if this is a unique pay system for glass haulers at COTC or if they're switching to that system company wide. He said, the only thing that affects his pay is hometime because they deduct a day's wages from his salary pay for every day he is home.

The flatbed account from what I remember in COTC is sliding scale salary. I'm not sure how fair it is because I haven't done it, but im going to call them today and see what it's all about again. Ive also started looking into DSV aka Sammons rebranded to see if that will work for me, mostly because it pisses me off way more when other people mess up my paycheck than when I do.Truckermania Thanks this.

I’m sorry to hear that been working here at COTC for about a year. It’s not a true salary kinda like a tier system everything is included. They tell you you’ll average 2800 to 3200 a week they mean it! That’s 1525 to 1750 gross pay. Keep in mind they pay for insurance and have a 100% match up to 4% 401k and loyalty pay which first year is 1 cpm goes. To 3cpm after 3 years people are making over 71k to up to 90k here say average is probably 78k first year they don’t lie here what recruiter tells you is the truth they truly have a care for their drivers and it’s always the driver first then the truck. Just a great companyBud A., QuietStorm and Truckermania Thank this.

Thanks for that info. I'll probably hear back from them tomorrow. Gotta run it by the old lady before I talk to them though. She pretty much dictates my home time, gets pretty #####y by the end of the second week haha.
