I've been at Danny Herman Trucking for nearly 2 years, and the pay does seem kind of low!
But it seems it makes up for it. Most of my trips are from California to the upper midwest, 2000+ miles. There have been a few times it took forever to get loaded. The longest was 9 hours, then loaded, and no overnight parking kicked out at 1am. Lucky it was only 120 miles to one of our terminals in Lebanon, Tennessee. Ya, I was pissed, but I would say 95% of the time load and unload are under 2 hours. The El Paso yard is full most of the time. Many times I've run 650+ miles late at night thinking, "Oh, I will just park at the El Paso yard, and it's packed." I had to park in the wide street (some other trucks do also).
I've thought about switching to crete for better CPM, but there are no APUs, and I heard most of their trips are short.
The only company I see myself switching to is Wal-Mart since I do meet their requirements: 30+ months of current experience, perfect record, no tickets, and a 0 CSA score.Stonehjl, bryan21384, Bumper and 1 other person Thank this. -
Won't be much different. -
We run all dry van and we pay well over 55cpm maxed out.
If we sit more than 2 hours, we get 20 dollars an hour out to 8 hours, then it turns to a full 200 dollars per day layover.
Our trucks top out at 72-75 depending on how long youve been here.
I don't sit hours waiting for a load. Usually my next load is on my qualcomm before getting unloaded. Usually.
My paychecks are not consistent only because I go home so my hometime weeks suck. Last week my paycheck was almost $2100.
My company did just start the fuel solution thing, literally in the last few weeks. That kinda sucks.
We are about 60% D&H and that's going up by the month. Trailers are hard to get right now.
I don't have to sit to wait to be repaired for any other reason than mechanics are backed up with other work.
I'm given the option to take my 34 when I want to.
So no, what this guy experienced is not "par for the course."Last edited: May 18, 2023

I worked for the company you speak of a few years ago. There were plenty of times when dispatch just couldn't get me the long runs. Plenty of times I had to wait for loads, and the main thing for my specific situation that turned me off: plenty of trips in and out of their shops to work on the same issue multiple times. Each time the problem supposedly was "resolved", so that I never really qualified for the minimum breakdown time to get paid, even though the hours added up over the course of the month.
My sense is that most otr companies really strive to get you 3000+ miles a month, no matter what their cpm is. Personally I think I'd rather make the same amount driving 2500 vs. 3000 miles. I just remember those long runs at DHT ended up feeling like a burden after a while, because their driver chair was uncomfortable. If they could bump the pay up by at least 7cpm, spec the trucks better for comfort and do better with their shops, I would seriously consider going back there as a first choice. What you say about the failure to pay detention sounds like a big step backwards. I never had that problem at least.
Edit: Maybe my memory's off right now. Part of me wants to say that they never even had a detention policy.Last edited: Jun 7, 2023
