I have narrowed it down to two positions that both offer decent incentives as a starting point. One seems to make more cash and home time albeit odd hours. The other one seems to offer a better future with multiple opportunities down the road, lower starting pay and less frequent home time. I want to get the most out my first year so I'm thinking the slower buck with a better future.
After the year is up I could stay with the second company and try something different without switching employers.
I am looking at this written down and I think my mind is made up.

What companies If you don't mind me asking

Theres more to it than home time and pay. If paid cpm, how many miles do they avg, is it LTL, drop and hook or dealing with many of the slower vendors, where do they go(nyc, ca or mid America running).....
.50cpm is good, but if only getting 2000miles a week, it sucks! -
I don't know what's tougher - studying for the CDL, or choosing your first company!

For me, not even in CDL school yet it's a bit daunting, but I'll be spending the next two weeks or so seriously researching companies that meet my criteria: routes that get me weekly home time as soon as possible once I'm done company training is the main factor - I don't want to risk my marriage with extended OTR. I'm finding searching the companies job postings for my region is proving beneficial: US Xpress & Schneider both look promising so far.

@Ky Trucker25 - One is red trucks and the other has orange.
@walstib - The pay is lower than that. I'm not sure what to take and what to blow off. Right now I'm getting $0/hr sittin on my butt.
I got a pre-hire offer from one of them. Does that lock me in? What if another offer comes up? -
pre hires are worth the paper they're printed on, if you print it.
The .50 was just to show better "rate" of pay doesn't mean more pay.
Don't let desperation cause you to make decision you may regret in a short time. I would say the "orange" should be 100% out of the question and would be a terrible decision.

Don't dismiss a company because one person says they are bad. For everyone one person that says a company is bad ten more might say it's fine. This DOES NOT go for every company though. Some places are the exact opposite.
I had a list of criteria I wanted in a company and I have seen varying opinions on each one of them. You can weigh all the opinions you want but if a company has exactly what you are looking for then don't let anybody change your mind because they have a negative outlook on that company.Da Beast Thanks this. -
