I thank all of those for the helpful and positive responses. For the rest, I'm glad you don't make any decisions. I am doing just fine in my Quality truck. I would do fine anywhere I went. Where and how I got my truck doesn't have any bearing as to what kind of driver and business man I would be. You don't know everyone's situation. Some are lazy and this is an easy way to get a truck. Some have had some s&$@ happen in their life that made this one of the only choices they had. It's the individual that decides if they have what it takes. This isn't a 9-5. You can't always go home all the time or every time you want to when starting out. You can't always cherry pick loads. My saying is and has always been, a little bit of something is much better than a whole lot of nothing.

From what I have read here and what I know and see as a whole in the industry right now, I think I will keep a channel open at Mercer for now and watch the future.

For those that have given their honest opionins, I hope the industry gets going and the rates pick up and hope to one day meet you at Mercer. Thanks

Would you guys recommend joining Mercer if I own the truck [no payments or lease], with 30k for business expenses, or is it just that bad right now.

Join the carrier that best fits your business. Mercer has some great marks in some areas...and horrible in others. Need to look at your operation and see if its a good fit. Are there things at Mercer I really like....hell yes. Are there aspects bout Mercer that piss me off.....yup. The fact is you wont really find about these things until you start running with any carrier.

However I will give you advice regarding absolutely what not to do.

    #1 Dont go to Landstar.

#2 Dont go to a company that Lease (Fleece) Purchases the trucks to the drivers.

#3 Dont go to a company that has both owner operators and company drivers.

I dont want to turn this topic into an open debate regarding one carrier and another. However, I will say this much about Mercer. You run your business fully.

You wont compete against broker trucks (see #1):violent1:
Mercer has much more good points than bad.

Actually DAT says flatbed truckload capacity will rise significantly in March. Below is last month

    PER DAT:biggrin_25519:

    Flatbed Ratio Rises 19%

Feb 21 - 27 - Flatbed load volume rose 17% and capacity declined 2% last week, for a 19% increase in the load-to-truck ratio. The national average flatbed rate fell 3¢ last week, to $1.80 per mile.

Parking in Louisville can suck. LOL

But that is one reason why Mercer is such a cash flow positive trucking company. They never went out and bought acres upon acres of high priced land and and built multi million dollar offices.

Mercer has always been very smart with their money, that way they don't have to steal ours.

Like he said the parking in Louisville is outright horrible.

My main beef is the rates for many of the loads. I mean these rates are outright BAD :protest:. Sit there and tell me you would go from Missouri to Massachusetts for $1.58 per mile.....or less. I double dare you lol. This is. Pretty common theme at Mercer Many of the loads are rebrokered loads....and re....re....brokered loads. I would love to see Mercer allow the drivers to help look for loads. It would not be that hard to set parameters and procedure to set some standards for the owner operators. Obviously the Mercer agent will have to check out the load we found and give it the green light. There are many trucking companies that permit their owner operators to help get loads.

Case and point......I was in Nebraska a few weeks ago. Mercer had no loads within 150 miles. Mercer had nothing all day. I got on DAT and found over 350 flatbed loads. #### good loads too. :yes2557:

All I am saying is allow the owner operators ( that want to) look for loads also. Sitting in an area rich in freight for days makes no sense whatsoever.:violent1:

That is my main beef. Also parking in Louisville is horrid lol.

Please....do not give me the "you need to learn the system" lecture lol. I know exactly how it works.:argue:
    Peace
